John Vanek wrote: Blake, the Techs are much warmer than the MBPs. Ice climbing (with an hour approach in snow over my ankles) led to frost nip in the MBPs. That was one of the reasons I bought the Techs. The main reason was improved performance on steep ice. For most alpine snow or neve’ my set up is the MBPs and BD Sabertooths. For winter ice, Techs and Lynx crampons. I love both pair of boots. If I have a long approach with the Techs I loosen the laces above the ankle. Hope this helps. That helps a lot! Thank you for the response and info, it's truly appreciated.

Hijacking the thread a little: looks like we're starting to see some feedback on the new Phantom Techs which is great. Has anyone has experience with the new model of the Mont Blanc Pros (MBPs)? There don't seem to be any comments as yet in other MP forums.

Shepido wrote: I might need to switch to an insole with a lower arch. We shall see. I have just normal arches, but need the volume reduced. Standing still they feel fine but walking feels like there is excess pressure on my arch area. I've put them in the oven and fitted them but there is still pressure in the arch area. I'm just not sure what is normal and wear in and what is not normal. I might stick with what I have and see if it wears in with time. For now I'm going to wear the 43s and climb a bit more in them. You may not even need the high arch support. I need the support and it took a few weeks for my feet to adapt to it. The facia on the bottom of your foot needs to stretch out. The 43's sound like the right size for you. Maybe even try the 42.5's for comparison. I found that after even a short walk they did not feel so snug I ended up deciding on the smaller of the 2 boots I bought. I settled on half size up from running shoe size.

greggrylls wrote: Huh, i thought the factory insole felt cheap and flimsy. I fit mine with my usual lowish arch light blue super feet. I wear a 9 street shoe, 41.5 climbing shoes and I think the 42s are for me. No toe contact and minimal heel lift. These boots are so svelte and sweet. Overall, yes.I just meant that for a change there was a generous amount of forefoot cushion and they took the extra step with the aerogel insert (extra insulation). They still have no arch support or proper heel cup.

Just dropping in to say that "fitment" is not a synonym for "fit".
You're welcome!

Just ordered a pair for the wife, I'm sure I'll hear about it - although she is moving from an ancient pair of Asolo boots, so not sure how relevant it will be.

You're welcome! You are 100% correct. Current english has this word meaning something else. This used to mean one thing fitted to another thing to serve a specified purpose. A boot in this case. It seemed like a... fitting title at the time. I suppose I should come up with something more clever and befitting.

with a new (as of late 2019) Phantom Guide, there now are deals on the old PG and I'd like to snag a deal.
I'm a center-cut street euro 43. My main ice boots (the old silver Sportiva Trango) are 43 and fit very well. From this thread it looks like my best size in the PG would be either 43 or 43.5. Could someone persuade me to commit to either of the two sizes? I'm leaning 43 but I certainly want to avoid toe-slamming

I needed to go up 1/2 size from my normal size to get a good fit.YMMV. But, consider foot swelling and sock thickness. The last thing you want is too tight fitting technical boots from the start.
much easier to fill volume if its just slightly large. if you are between sizes - error to the size up.

I'm also a 43 on the nose (for virtually every pair of shoes I own). 43 phantom techs are perfect for me. I'm taking them out on a Dawn patrol tomorrow, I'll update you on them then.

Any opinions on warmth, new model vs old or phantom guides?

Not directly related to your specific fit issues, but general FYI: I was able to punch my heels like a ski boot on my phantom techs. Allowed me to keep a nice fit for climbing, while taking away my heel hot spots. YMMV and YGD obviously..

You mean Phantom Tech and not Phantom Guide right? I am a 43.5 or 44 in most shoes/boots and the previous version of the Phantom Tech fits me perfectly in the 43.5. So I would guess the 43 is better for you than the 43.5.

Stever wrote: any tips on how you did that? Used a heat gun to warm up the heel, being careful not to melt the rubber off. A welding clamp with a 3inch pvc endcap on one end, and a rounded 1 in cap on the other, clamped on the area of pressure. The plastic seems to be thin enough, you could probably use a rounded dowel in place of the clamp.
