Keith Wood wrote: Yeah. I agree. Some people will want to do that. The proposal is to sort of head them off at the pass. Because if things keep going the way they are, this sport will get sanitized for sure. Better, I say, to self-regulate than to get regulated. And with computers the ability to do so is quite flexible. The toggle, especially, would allow for a very customizable experience, and what's wrong with that? Don't people already have the option of a customizable experience? They can simply choose not to call a route or problem by a name that they find offensive. They can choose to avoid pages on this website that contain words that they find offensive. Etc. I don't think many people would object to someone else calling "Titty Fuck" by the name "T.F." or "that V6 left of The Crack" because that person is uncomfortable calling it by its actual name.
If the problem is with the "official" names, then a customizable experience is no solution for the offended. What they would want, arguably, is to impose their tastes on the entire climbing community. It's not enough that they don't have to say the offensive name; they don't want other climbers to say it either. This is where we have a disagreement that goes beyond the ignoring of history or departure from FA naming customs.

Mountain Project.
1. Presents a non issue to the community. 2. Get told "if it's a problem present a solution or shut up about it. 3. Present maybe a solution. 4. Get told to shut up about it.
Fixed that for you.

Go climb at Hueco if you want to be offended least by names. All names there are catered to humanity's moral palate.

The visceral response this subject matter always gets is that people see the kind of world the crusaders want, and despite whatever their intentions are know that it would be a horror show.

Its your generations fault. You misogynistic pigs came up with these demeaning route names that are both insensitive and offensive. So why don't you accept some responsibility for once on how your generation fucked up this planet, now us millennials have inherited this POS society you ass tarps created and are just trying to fix it. Good god

As one of the free speech nuts, I was also thinking that something along this line was a good idea. I'd only add that it would be nice to be able to inactivate the hiding feature for your own account, so that you could see all the hidden names without having to unhide them. It might also be good to have not just a minimum percentage of votes to hide a route name, but an absolute number of votes (20? 50?). Any route name that's truly offensive will get that many votes in seconds, and it might cut down on people doing it just to mess with the site or with a particular FA. To me the idea that one offended user could unilaterally cause a route name to be hidden seems like a bit much.

Here's the solution for y'all -- just add the following to the MP route pages:

On the REI overlord part; they are part of the "Future of Climbing" Convention that is coming up. So they are sure to be pushing the safe space type ideology, as it is business friendly to promote inclusion/PC ideology. On the route names part, I cannot fathom how names truly upset people enough to demand their alteration. Climbing was, and should be, lead by the danger seeking explorers who push the envelope and piss people off.

If you're concerned about a route name being offensive, you obviously have too much time on your hands. The PC culture is breeding a whole new level of racism by being offended by everything, the younger generations will be more racist than your parents generation because of it, I guarantee it. Stop acting like words are more painful than the rock you hit your head on. Grow a spine and just climb.
