Hey everyone. My climbing partners car was broken into two days ago at the East pond trail head of the Kanc My triple trad rack (black diamond c4), C3s, and totems were all stolen. Harness, helmet, climbing shoes were all taken also. Everything was in a BD speed 40 pack.
All of my cams are marked with red electrical tape.
My mammut pack with my laptop was also stolen. My Patagonia duffel with all of my clothes and tx3 approach shoes were stolen.
My partners climbing gear, her schoolwork, and all her nursing equipment were stolen.
Her pack is an EMS blue 40L
If you see anything come up for sale that seems suspicious please message me or Eva Macfarlane
If there are any climbing shops that resell gear please be on the lookout for someone selling a lot of gear (IME - International Mountain Equipment)

I would also call Outdoor Gear Exchange in Burlington if I were you. They are really good about being on the lookout for stolen gear. That shit sounds awful, I'm so sorry.

Forest rangers might have some insight too; car break-ins are unfortunately not uncommon along Kancamagus trailheads. Often people looking to fuel drug habits through theft (bad ambassadors for our home state sadly). If it happened outside city limits of Lincoln, state police may have jurisdiction and/or be able to help.

Gear was found!! My bag with all the trad gear was found buried in the woods. The police will have my gear until the case is solved.
Any insight on trad gear in a bag, buried in the ground and two days of rain? Safe to climb on??

So you still won't get your gear back.

These types of cases generally aren't solved quickly (if at all). I would follow up with the police in a week or two and ask if pictures of the gear would suffice for their evidence.

which could be never. somehow prove its yours and tell them you want it back now, you need it to be able to climb and cant afford to buy new gear because they are holding it. say you cant wait for them to decide to close the case, as it may never be solved.

Adam, I wouldn't worry about your gear being wet for a few days. Pretty common on long multi-day climbs- especially alpine routes. Your good to go.

I’m glad both you and Eva will eventually get your gear back... This makes me think about what the police would accept as proof of ownership of climbing gear...It’s not like we have a registration for it :)

Definitely stay on top of the police and follow up about when you can get your gear back, its all too common that they forget about or misplace stuff and then have some sort of "cleaning" after 12 months and whoops all your stuff is gone.

If you were able to specifically identify the gear, or at least some of it to the police...(..." several of my cams and slings had my xxx and yyy color tape on them" ) at the time you reported the theft, and these iden. marks are still there, I should think the police could get by with photos of the gear, and a complete list with value(s).
I believe Grand Theft is still a low number in NH..($200 , $500 ?????). BUT, except for fingerprints (or DNA??? Doubt very much they'd spend the $$$'s / time-and-effort to run that unless there's some larger crime involved later on) there's no way to tie any future would-be-caught-theives with your particular theft. (fingerprints, TV shows notwithstanding, isn't used very often in such cases...did they fingerprint your broken-into-car? 99% chance, answer is "No". ) I suppose the police might want to try to get fingerprints off of the cams if they catch "them". Maybe some compromise....police keep the large cams where there might be fingerprints and you get to take home, right "now", slings, small nuts, small cams and biners.
Just a thought.

I read in today's Conway Daily Sun that the "Kanc Car Thieves" have been caught. Hope this helps.

They release the names yet? atypical repeat Offenders, but I went to work before I got the paper.

An update.
The scum bags were caught a few hours after they broke into our car via bait car.
The police took my gear out of the bag to let it dry out. I was able to get the contents off my computer for work.
I’m getting in contact with the prosecutor to see exactly why they still need my stuff after they have been photographed and documented.
