Indian Creek Camping - keeping beer cold

Flying in and going to the creek in a few weeks, not sure which campground we'll be at yet, likely Bridger Jack or some other BLM site.  From what I've been reading, seems like Moab is the nearest civilization?  meals are not gonna be a problem, sandwiches, ramen, i don't need to keep any of that cold.  But the beer.  Gotta keep the beer cold.  Any beta on this topic?  Can I find ice somewhere closer than Moab?  Dry ice?  As of now my thoughts were pick up a cheap burner cooler by the airport and load up before heading to the creek.  Ice isn't gonna last 5 days in a cheap cooler in the desert.

Get a coleman extreme cooler. Super cheap and a block of ice (not chips) lasted four days in moab for me. It was not in my hot car but still. Do not put anything in the cooler that is not already cold. Cover the cooler in a damp towel.

Chris Kalous has a mini fridge somewhere around Scarface. He’ll most likely let you store your shit in it, if you send him a picture of you sending Scarface.

I'm not sure if you could find a cooler in Monticello, but there is a liquor store and gas stations that will have ice. Keep in mind, in Utah good beer (above 3.2%) is only found at Liquor stores not sold cold.

Thanks!

The block ice is a great idea, appreciate the reminder on the beer as well.  Flying in to Grand Junction, so i'll pick up a cooler and buy some adult beers there and leave the 3.2 kiddie beers in Utah.  Scarface is on the to-do list, but i'm not banking on a clean send for mini-fridge privileges.

Most people don't realize that in Utah the alcohol content of beer is measured by weight. In the rest of the country it's done by volume. So when folks hear "3.2%" they compare that to nominal 5% by volume of Bud and think it's very weak and "watered down".
Facts:
3.2% by weight = 4% by volume
Guinness on tap in Ireland is 3.3% by weight
If you want the same amount of alcohol that you get in 12oz of PBR (which is about 5.1% by vol)from elsewhere in a Utah beer, you would need to consume an extra 0.85 oz of the Utah beer - a few drops more than half a shot. And if you're just drinking it to get a buzz, there are more efficient methods.

Also, any reasonably competent brewer can make a good tasting 6.5% beer - it takes real skill to do the same at 4%. The Utah craft brewers excel at it.

Definitely buy beer in CO. Closest ice to the Creek is in Monticello or possibly at the Needles Outpost store which is 15 mins towards Canyonlands. Can’t remember if they sell ice though.

That's a lot of words to defend piss water.

As of 2 years ago, Needles Outpost had ice AND Polygamy Porter.  Keep cooler as full as possible, even stuffing clothing, towels, etc on the top to take up dead airspace. A down sleeping bag is fantastic for this. Keep it in the shade and not in your car. Secure top with heavy rock at all times so ravens don't steal shit.  Block ice.  If you can, steal some yuppie's Yeti.

The sign advertising them definitely says they sell ice, but I'm not completely sure.  They have a freezer for ice cream so I imagine they have ice on hand as well.  Just know you'll be paying a premium.

They have a campground, too, so I'd say that ice is likely

Seeing that their gas is over $6/gal.......

Just for the record, I love Utah, but not your grocery store piss beer.  Nothing more disappointing that a 3.2% IPA.  Hot tip: You can get the real stuff in cans at the little store in the front of the Moab brewery, anytime they are open.

Put dry ice under your "wet" ice. Works like a charm to extend things. All the other tips about keeping the cooler full with cold stuff and lid closed at all times are ALSO true. And buy your beer cold if possible.

Just drink it when you wake up, should be cold from the overnight.

It's more efficient and works longer if the dry ice is on top of everything. The cold and heavier CO2 want to travel downward in the cooler. If the water ice is on top of the dry ice then it's very likely the water will come into contact with the dry ice and turn it to gas very quickly.

Your cooler top to bottom should look like:

lid
dry ice
food items
water ice

. . .

The math seems off.

12 ounces of PBR (at 5.1% Alcohol by Volume) yields 0.612 ounces of alcohol.
You'd need 15.3 ounces of beer that is 4% ABV to yield 0.612 ounces of alcohol.

So instead of "a few drops more than half a shot," you need over two additional 1.5 ounces shots.

First world problem.

Be warned; dry ice can easily freeze your beer.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
