This week's entrant to the most uselessly expensive gear contest: the mammut trad sling

https://www.mammut.com/us/en/p/2040-02390-12176/alpine-trad-sling/

So would you buy one?

I clicked the link and am impressed at the stupidity of the product. Nice find.

Note that it includes a carabiner. Taking that into account it's only a touch more expensive than anyone else's rabbit runners.

I've used the BD one of these a few times climbing with a buddy. it made me want one, it's for sure easier than faffing with a double length sling.

Spent like five minutes wondering why you'd want a gear sling that can be unclipped causing all of your gear to slide off the end. Then I realized that I misread the label.

Mammut, who makes pretty good stuff, needs to get real on their apparel prices. Their Eiger Extreme line, though nice, is astronomical for nothing more than what your can get elsewhere for a quarter to half the price.

I feel like that would be more useful as a big ass trad draw. Pete’s farewell, the first few moves outta the cave on Standard or thin air come to mind.

As I'm trying to figure out the "why" for this item my wife walks behind me as says: "That looks like a dumb necklace"

"You wear the Alpine Trad Sling across your chest like a normal round sling, but instead of pulling the sling over your head and arm, just unclip the carabiner and pull the sling from your body."

The description is hilarious. The same can be accomplished by clipping a regular 120cm sling with a biner.

Same thing as the Metolius rabbit runner. I like it.

This is literally just a rabbit runner. Their choice of product photo is poor for demonstrating how one would use it. If you've not tried one, I'd suggest giving it a go. I carry a couple rabbit runners. 120cm extension with the bulk of a 60cm sling. Pretty handy for threads and other natural pro too.

You get a 120 cm of extension in the same space as a 60 cm. Not a terrible idea, it'd be nice if they sold these without the carabiner.

I'll stick with my I inch tubular webbing tied with a Beer Knot runner trad sling.
Price? About 5 bucks

that sling is pennies compared to this

The Eiger Extreme range is ludicrously priced if any kind of cost/effectiveness calculation is made. However when you visit somewhere that stocks the stuff, like Pollux Sport in Meiringen, it becomes clear the customers Mammut are aiming at are rather different to the likes of us! It  begins to vaguely make sense, in a late capitalism kind of way.

The Diamond hang board cost breakdown:
Board:$100
Silicone Phone holder:$150
Free Mobile App to Train like the Pro you cant train like becasue your fingers will explode:$200

Additional cost: Plywood and Screws:$30

Sounds reasonable to me.

I mean it is a sizable chunk of walnut, that's needlessly expensive. Why the hell aren't they just using poplar?

Walnut has a grain profile that more closely matches the texture of polyurethane climbing holds than poplar. /s
