Ankle surgery after lead fall

Took a lead fall on july 7th and got xrays on the 8th but there was to much swelling. Was diagnosed with dislocated ankle and severe sprain of deltoid ligament and was sent home with crutches and told to ice and elevate. No boot or anything to protect it. I wasn't able to move my toes or ankle. They made an appointment for today the 12th with a specialist. Went in this morning and took new xrays with hopes of quick recovery. The doctor found a couple fractures and 3 places where bone had broke off. He said 2 of them should grind down and turn into powder but the large one will need surgery.  He consulted the surgeon and she said it was required but wasn't sure if there was enough there to reattach with screws or if it was just remove the fragments. After Cat scan I am now scheduled for Surgery Monday. Worst part is i can't even take Ibuprofen due to its blood thinning properties. Easy for someone else to ask you to discontinue pain medications but they did fit me with a boot, can't walk on it but it is nice not having added pain with every little bump. I apologize for more of a rant than anything.

That sounds like it would be a bit frustrating. I wish you a speedy recovery. Anything you gleaned from the accident that could potentially help others?

I would recommend testing your belayer, I listened to how much climbing he had done and he seemed pretty knowledgeable but when you scream past 3 bolts and deck at the bottom I would assume the system didn't work as intended.

Ah, thank you. Crazy game we play. Again, I wish you a speedy recovery.

I looked up the surgeon and she specializes in this type of surgery and comes highly recommended. They couldn't tell from the cat scan or xray how large and intact the bone fragments are. If they are small they just remove them if it's one large piece they screw it back into place. I appreciate the input and have actually talked with one of her patients who swears she is the best at what she does.  She's also been practicing her specialty for several years which helps me feel more confident.

There is a variety of anti-pain meds without blood thinning properties, your physician can most definitely prescribe them. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is one OTC that could help, but you should consult a medical professional.

Went through surgery yesterday, they went in and removed all the bone fragments that were floating around in my ankle. Gave me medicine for the pain and swelling. Boot puts pressure on both side were I'd broke off the bone, painful but hoping when swelling decreases it gets better.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
