There seems to be a trend on MP, with some posters expanding their contributions by adding named toprope routes mere inches from existing lines in order to gain point status. They even draw these colorful overlays on photos to illustrate their handiwork. MP needs to revise the point status criteria. It encourages “point seekers” to sink to low standards in order to gain status, and blurs the lines of ethical route establishment.

Who gives a shot about me point status? When did this become 8a?

This looks similar to another post here:

This doesn't seem like an issue to me, as long as the routes somewhat valid lines/variations, why not? You can see where any users points came from, and I don't can't think of any major downsides to having a lot of points on MP, I don't think... it changes anything much? It's not like MP points really mean much, imho. If it doesn't affect your own (MP) experience, maybe it doesn't matter so much?
Can you report routes that you think for some reason shouldn't be a 'route' on MP? Aren't all routes added reviewed by an admin or something too? Maybe you could contact the local admins of an area if it's a problem, or provide us with some examples?

What benefits exactly do you think all those points give you?
If you think someone has entered the routes incorrectly, you can contact the manager or the admin for the area

The OP clearly stated it: status.
If anyone has ever wondered why I'm such an alpha, MP points is the reason.

Seriously, if points conferred status, I’d be able to name the top point-holders... or at least have some idea... and I have no clue!

It's a long time secret on MP that points can be exchanged for cigarettes.
There were a couple of "point whores" bitd here but I managed to "take care of them."

I thought it was pretty clear that no one would ever get more points than Blitzo due to his massive catalog of beautiful photography, so we could all just forget it was there.
Edit: I'm ranked 601. Tradiban is 29, clearing illustrating he is whore! Or slut. Depends on your perspective.

I recently saw my friend Rodger (age 80), climbing at City of Rocks. The topic of climbing sites came up and he remarked with amusement about the ranking system here. He’s currently ranked number 75, because he enters routes that he climbs in the Dolomites, where he climbs a lot. Go Rodger!

I didn't even know what the points were for! Looks like mine are for graphs and photos of stuff I've tested.

I'd feel better if we could accumulate followers. My life is not complete unless I get new followers. I've never even paid for help getting followers, people just love to follow me. It makes me feel very special!

I was almost swimming in status.

"It's all made up and the points don't matter"
Actually, I didn't realize there were points until you pointed it out. Now I'm corrupted.
