(Opinions and hate mail welcome) This is my attempt at suggesting a universal code for distinguishing between "ticking" holds for hands and feet.
| = Hand Hold --- = Foot Hold
I understand that not everyone appreciates a ticked up route, and some think they should be removed as soon as you are finished with them, but I am not one of them. I don't mind chalk or ticks, and if you hate them, sorry friend, try to climb the routes I project before me. The one exception is for ticking up gear routes, that would be pretty annoying seeing a ticked up crack. Clean that up when you're done. That said, I wouldn't be outraged, I would just brush them when I was finished. For sport climbing though, show me the way! ALSO, follow local ethics. If certain rock shouldn't be chalked up, then don't. I just happen to climb on Sandstone and chalk doesn't last forever like it would in some places.

All ticks should be removed from routes so the people that come after you can have the same experience on the rock that you enjoyed.
Personally I don't use ticks, but what you have presented in your argument sounds pretty selfish.

If you can’t distinguish a hand from a foot hold on a ticked up route, you probably shouldn’t be on the aforementioned route.

Maybe we could even use colored tape, that way it’s easy to mark each hold on every problem in the area. And set up a rental station at the trailhead for people who don’t have their own climbing shoes.

Ticks remove the possibility to onsite a climb. Say no to 'ticks'.

So how should you "tick" your hold if using it for both hand/s and feet?
+ = hands & feet

Maybe we can just bolt brightly colored plastic holds to the rocks so everyone can see where to go....
Or maybe go climb in the gym if you can't read routes

Seriously?
The proper way to do this is to permanently mark the TIC with colored paint. But you-Ma Ja can’t tic unless you have earned your “Ticker Certificate” ..... I have one and I can tell you The requirements to earn one were extensive.

I'd bet they don't clean it off. Or course, if a pro climber made a video of a crack climb it is probably a grade I couldn't do. Still a pisser.

If certain rock shouldn't be chalked up, then don't. I just happen to climb on Sandstone and chalk doesn't last forever like it would in some places. I will attempt a serious answer to this... The point of the tickmarks is to be able to see the hold/precise spot on the hold that you need. And your horizontal -- mark for footholds is rather useless, it would be hard to see from above, and not precise enough for tiny holds. However, people already DO use a convention for marking tiny footholds that will be used for foot placement only, not for a handhold. They place a little vertical tick ABOVE the foothold, not below the hold, like you would do for a handhold. that way you can look down and see the tickmark pointing to the foothold.
And now a disclaimer for everyone who's going to berate me for answering this: 1) I do not use chalk-- AT ALL, I do not carry a chalk bag, and I have never placed a tick to mark a hold, whether a foot, or hand-hold. 2) I do carry a brush, and I brush the chalk off
