Hey guys! I need some advice about how to best go about finding a mentor to teach me the ins and outs of climbing outside! I will be in San Diego during a research internship (9 weeks in duration) and really want to take advantage of this time to further my climbing! Ultimate goal is to learn to lead this summer and then eventually learn to crack climb but I don’t really know how to best go about finding a mentor. I would hate to feel like a burden to someone

Not always easy depending on how outgoing you are, but trying to make friends at a gym and eventually saying "I am new to the area, if you are going climbing outside anytime and wouldn't mind me tagging along I would really appreciate it."

If you want to learn to crack climb you're in one of the best spots. Go to Woodson as much as possible, really only a pad is needed for 70% of stuff there. It's a great spot for working on technique, just dont stare at all the trash on the ground the whole time and you'll have fun. My advise is show up early and hike all the way up first then hit problems on the way down

I had no idea San Diego had so much crack climbing! I’m hoping I can find someone solid to teach me basic technique! I’ve looked into a few books I might snag too. Bummer about the trash but I don’t mind cleaning crags up a bit when I go so maybe I can make a dent on that too.

Do you like old crusty dog poop bags? Loads of them at woodson.

No real crack climbing, but Santee on weedat afternoons/evenings is a good way to meet folks that climp outside. Trying to find shit at woodson without a locals help is not possible.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
