Not to hijack, but is Calaveras Dome a "destination" type crag? or is it more locals?
There is a route called Silk Road that really intrigues me, but it would be a big deal to get out there.

Locals only bro ;)
I really like it, but if your coming from far away it would be hard to choose to go there over Yosemite or the High Sierras. Definitely less crowded though, for now...

There is a route called Silk Road that really intrigues me, but it would be a big deal to get out there. There are many granite climbing areas in California that are extremely good but not visited as much for arbitrary reasons. Cal dome is one such area.

Calaveras isn't considered a "destination" only because it is in California--and there is too damn much other great climbing in California that it just doesn't get the 'respect' it deserves. Anyplace else it would be a major destination crag--or really crags as there are quite a few formations in that valley. A good guidebook, a few more bolts, less poison oak, fewer rattlers, and an easier approach drive would help as well. Whatever, it is an incredible area and definitely worth a visit from wherever.

Panther creek is passable. Bear river rd is open, but not spur 19 which can get you back into cal domes the round about way.

has anyone ever come in from the top? Looks like there's a cool rap in that has some good looking climbable pitches on part of it, but what about getting out without climbing out? The routes to the top seem either too run out or too hard for me.
I've also considered biking in Ellis. It wouldn't be too awful biking out, slow going, but prob only 3 hrs

I’ve done the rap route a couple times. It’s not too bad if you know where you’re going. Wild exposure! A bit of climbable stuff on the way down, but a lot is very traversing. The walk out from the base would be an epic poison oak infested bushwhack. Memories!!!

Salamanizer I'm interested in Panther Creek Road. You say its passable, but the person at the ranger station that I talked to said that that road has been closed for 3 years due to washout. Wondering if you can clear things up for me there. I was told there is no way to get down there at this moment and to check back on the 15th regarding the opening of Ellis Road. Also, in other news, I was told that within the next year, White Azalea and the other campgrounds will be fee sites operated by a concessionaire due to various incidents of garbage/trash/etc left at campsites.

Tiger creek got washed out and never fixed. Panther creek was good last year and wasn’t washed out as far as I know this year. Haven’t been down it yet but it’s usually open by now. Ellis road never opens until June.
