Rack stolen from car (at Calico I)
|
|
Looks like my rack was stolen out of the back of the car while parked at Calico first pullout yesterday. I'd appreciate it if anyone can keep any eye out for any of these items, all are marked with orange paint and/or tape. All the cams were racked on DMM Chimeras. |

I think there’s a Vegas climbers Facebook page. Might be worth pinging that. Out of curiosity, was it visible from the outside and were the windows broken? This is my nightmare and I’m curious if my tactics to avoid it are enough or not... |

Damn dude was your shit unlocked?? Theres 200 cars In that parking lot this time of year and 2+ buses of tourists constantly staring at everything on a quarter mile radius there... |

Only thing I can think of is the car was unlocked when I thought it was locked, rental car I just picked up, possible the remote lock didn't quite do what I thought it did so my dumb mistake. Gear wasn't visible at all but anyone could have seen us sorting gear before we set out. They definitely knew what they were taking since they took climbing gear and left other items. Lessons learned unfortunately. |

I don’t remember the details. Some kind of electronic hack that can happen when you use the key fob to remote lock the car (which is almost every new car). I have no idea if this is an urban myth... so you may actually have locked the car. |

Thiefs had a hack that let them unlock your doors from the app....so they'd just drive through neighborhoods pressing the button waiting for any car with uconnect to light up and they knew they were in |

In Paul's case, they could have waited for him to send the lock message from his keyfob then when he went out of sight used that captured information to unlock. [I'm only vaguely certain of the details of this, but it's not as simple as the previous reply inferred... and also does vary a bit from car to car, maker to maker] Found this from a quick google search: http://illmatics.com/remote%20attack%20surfaces.pdf |

Who’s going to apply that level of tech savvy to break into cars at the first pull out lol |

Some other stuff stolen out of the car |

Just to add I'm not sure the theft was that sophisticated. Seems pressing "lock" on the keyfob locks it but as long as it's in the vicinity you can open a door handle. We tested this later and could still be a good 20-25' away so very possible someone just watched us, moved around the side of the car and popped the door as we locked it and walked away. Next time I pick up a rental car I'll be doing some extensive testing on the fancy lock mechanism (or bringing a padlock...). |
