Rack stolen from car (at Calico I)

Looks like my rack was stolen out of the back of the car while parked at Calico first pullout yesterday. I'd appreciate it if anyone can keep any eye out for any of these items, all are marked with orange paint and/or tape. All the cams were racked on DMM Chimeras.

* BD C4 0.5 (x 2), 0.75, 1 (x 2), 2 (x 2), 3
* DMM Dragon #5 (blue, same as BD C4 #3)
* Wild Country Friend #2 (yellow)
* Black Totem (ugh)
* Assorted draws/slings - BD Oz alpine draws, Petzl Ange alpine draws, two mini quads (Mammut triple length slings)
* DMM Offset Nuts (racked on DMM UltraO)
* DMM Peanuts (racked on DMM UltraO)
* Probably other assorted carabiners, again w/ orange marking

If anyone else has ideas of who to notify locally about this let me know. Even if I don't get my gear back I think it would still be helpful for others to know if they're buying stolen gear from someone.

I think there’s a Vegas climbers Facebook page.  Might be worth pinging that. Out of curiosity, was it visible from the outside and were the windows broken? This is my nightmare and I’m curious if my tactics to avoid it are enough or not...

Only thing I can think of is the car was unlocked when I thought it was locked, rental car I just picked up, possible the remote lock didn't quite do what I thought it did so my dumb mistake. Gear wasn't  visible at all but anyone could have seen us sorting gear before we set out. They definitely knew what they were taking since they took climbing gear and left other items. Lessons learned unfortunately.

I read somewhere that this is happening regularly now. I don’t remember the details. Some kind of electronic hack that can happen when you use the key fob to remote lock the car (which is almost every new car). I have no idea if this is an urban myth... so you may actually have locked the car.

not a myth..happened to me, with my 2015 ram truck when uconnect first came out on all of them. Thiefs had a hack that let them unlock your doors from the app....so they'd just drive through neighborhoods pressing the button waiting for any car with uconnect to light up and they knew they were in

My understanding is that they have to intercept the signal.  In Paul's case, they could have waited for him to send the lock message from his keyfob then when he went out of sight used that captured information to unlock.  [I'm only vaguely certain of the details of this, but it's not as simple as the previous reply inferred... and also does vary a bit from car to car, maker to maker]

Found this from a quick google search:  http://illmatics.com/remote%20attack%20surfaces.pdf

Who’s going to apply that level of tech savvy to break into cars at the first pull out lol

Just to add I'm not sure the theft was that sophisticated. Seems pressing "lock" on the keyfob locks it but as long as it's in the vicinity you can open a door handle. We tested this later and could still be a good 20-25' away so very possible someone just watched us, moved around the side of the car and popped the door as we locked it and walked away. Next time I pick up a rental car I'll be doing some extensive testing on the fancy lock mechanism (or bringing a padlock...).

Also, big shoutout to Desert Rock Sports, would not have been able to gear up and complete the trip without their help. Support your local climbing stores!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
