Looking to gather some beginner trad routes to attempt soon. What was your first trad lead in Southern California?

Mine was one of the easy cracks on Trashcan rock in Joshua Tree (B-3 I think?). My 2nd was The Bong. Then a couple of the easy cracks on the right side of the Thin Wall in Real Hidden Valley. Lots to choose from in JTree!

My first trad lead was Pipe Cleaner (5.6) on Black Wall in the Sespe Gorge just north of Ojai. It's an awesome crag to learn trad on!!!

The Bong in JTree - tons of gear and very easy.

Turkey Chute in Mission Gorge(mostly 5.6 with a boulder problem down low).

The Stairs(5.4) or Beautiful(5.5) would also qualify.

Finger Lickin Good

at Suicide Rock.

The first move scared the shit out of me but seems so tame now. The rest is a pleasure cruise.

The Cookie on cookie cliff, kinda got sandbagged!  Brought lots of hexes!

Wow that's taxing my memory.  Either Left Ski Track at Tahquitz or Deflowered at Josh (the latter not being such a good choice).  I know the Bong is an early lead as well but definitely wasn't my first.

The Ramp at Mission Gorge, then Left Ski Track at Tahquitz, then the Bat Crack at Joshua Tree.

Some random crack in Ryan Campground on the southernmost rock pile. Probably unnamed, but it was about 5.7 and 15 feet high. After that I was more confident and led Mental Physics.

I agree with the J-Tree recommendations. So many routes with bomber gear.

You led the entire L Ski Track? Or just that first pitch? Upper part of LST seems like a total disaster for a beginner leader. But maybe you were just a total badass.

Beautiful and Turkey Chute, the Bong, and I think Mike's Books we're my first leads. Guess they are popular!

J-tree: Beginners One, The Bong, Leaping Leaner. Last one was an eye opener for a fledgling leader.

The whole thing. You can accomplish a lot when you're young and stupid.  Don't remember if it was my first lead but I was 14 and climbed it in basketball shoes.

Oh, well the B-ball shoes explain it all. Hopefully you dunked, too.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
