Sun hoodies for summer in NC

I’ll be working as a climbing instructor at a summer camp in western NC this summer. I sunburn very easily and I also need to cover tattoos, so I’m looking for a good sun hoody that works well for humid NC summer days. Currently considering the BD alpenglow (though I hear it isn’t great in humid conditions) or the OR echo (only UPF 15). Does anyone have experience with these? Or are there any other options out there that would serve me better?

Love my OR Echo Hoody - it's a "must-have" piece of gear in my kit whenever I'm now outdoors. In sunny conditions, hood up, w/a hat, and I can basically get away with just putting sunblock on my face/neck.

I'd certainly consider putting on a layer of sunblock on in the morning, as well as wearing something like this, though. Having the Echo is what I'm doing instead of going short sleeve'd or even shirtless.

Hated the echo hoody. The hood wasn't nearly big enough and it pulled up on the shoulders whenever I put it on. Had to return. Patagonia sunshade hoody is much nicer.

For someone who overheats readily, the Echo is nice because it's light and gauzy and very breathable. However, and probably for those very reasons, you can find yourself getting sunburned underneath it. I own three of them, so I know.

I use this:

It runs sorta small for a sun hoody

I'm sitting here right now in this and may start using it instead without anything under it:

My wife uses and loves the women's version of this:

Works well for me - I bought a size L, rather than the size M I usually buy from OR, as I knew I wanted something a bit loose fitting (and OR lists the fit as, "trim"). I wear it over my big ass BD helmet all the time. No pulling up. I have big honkin' shoulders.

I have an alpenglow. M tees, got it in a S because inventory levels. It works and provides coverage, but it smells awful faster than anything else I own.

I would look into fly-fishing sun hoodies and go either - cheap and disposable if you are hard on gear, or go merino (I love my voormi so much more than the alpenglow) if you don't think you will be shredding it over rock.

Patagonia Tropic Comfort 2 and the Prana one are pretty lightweight.  BD alpenglow is about the same weight and works just as well.  Can't really avoid the "long sleeve kinda sucks in humid environments."  Which camp?

I love Patagonia's sunhoody.  I think it's meant for fly-fishing?  It is nice light material and just oversized enough to get air flow in there.

I love my BD alpenglow but here in CO there is no humidity so I can't speak to that aspect.

Mountain Hardwear Kor Preshell is supposed to be super light and breathable but will block the sun.

Wore it a bunch last summer...Yosemite, Lovers Leap, Tuolumne...and this spring in sunny SE locations...  beats the sun, is UPF 50+, breathes great, lightweight.  I have an OR echo.  Love it.  But this one is much cooler.

I'm all about the Patagonia Tropic. Used it in Red Rock in the Spring and Tetons in the summer. Protects you from that sun brain drain feeling and with the hood up creates some shade and sometimes even a little bit of a breeze.

I worked in Brevard, NC for a summer. Sun hoodies don't do much with the humidity. They really only work well in dry environments. Try it if you like, but be prepared to be sticky when you sweat and prevent air from touching your arms.

OR Ensenada hoody is great. UPF 50, thumb loops, chest pocket. And much cheaper than other sun hoodies. Destroyed my first one in a chimney. Don’t do that.

I've used the BD Alpenglow for a couple years now, pretty happy with it, I've used it in RR and in the Northeast mostly.

I'm a fan of the prana sun hoodie. Super durable and pretty light.

  • Long sleeve hooded shirt in NC in summer. That’s going to suck. I have the BD and it’s great for even the hottest days in the desert, but the humidity would make it miserable here. Some of those vented fishing shirts are actually made for sun protection and to cool you off when they get sweat on them. Though you would definately lose some style points.

I have been using this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06WWDV7ZM

Price is good for a shirt that will be dragged through briers, rhododendron, and be used against rock. It sorta fits over a helmet, but works best to pull it up halfway over head and put helmet on. Covers neck perfect and does not get in way. I'll wear a short sleeve for the approach when sweating buckets in NC humidity then swap that out for the hooded long sleeve when on the rock and in the sun.

I'd recommend the Columbia fishing hoodies and "cachalot" hats.  I bought them for fishing and wear them under my climbing helmet often.  Consider the omni-freeze options, that material is great.

Columbia might have some stuff in their PFG line, I use the button downs fly fishing in Western NC, and have been considering dedicating one to climbing as well. They’re vented nicely, keep you cool and they would definitely look professional at a camp. Also You can find a lot of hiking & fishing caps that have a sun shade for you neck.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
