Original Post

The Salt Lake Climbers Alliance (SLCA) and Boulder Climbing Community (BCC) have teamed up with Dr. David Carter (author of this post) to conduct a survey of climbers' perspectives on climbing stewardship and advocacy. Survey data will help the SLCA and BCC better understand the climbing communities they represent and will be used to study what shapes climbers' perspectives on the work of local climbing organizations. Summary reports of the survey findings will be made publicly available.

At the end of the survey you can enter to win a drawing for free climbing gear. Click on the link below to take the survey.

More Info: Regardless of where you live, your input is wanted! Respondents will be routed by their responses to the most relevant survey questions (SLCA, BCC, or other). I'm an assistant prof of public policy at the University of Utah studying collective action among climbers. The survey findings summary reports will be housed with my other climbing-related research here.

Demographic information can reveal biases that are formed due to unfair treatment, which raises awareness about more subtle forms of prejudice, which allows us to get to a place where it doesn't matter

I identified as a Republican and the survey kicked me out, and suggested I stop climbing as well.

But seriously, thanks for taking the time to put this together.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the survey and my apologies for the late reply on my end. I will certainly post the results once they are compiled. The demographic questions are meant to give us a better idea of who all comprise the climbing community. Of course, the data are "exploratory" as the methods of distribution preclude any claims of representativeness (i.e. biases likely exist from the way the survey was sent out and data collected). Nonetheless, if LCOs wish to be more inclusive in their stewardship and advocacy efforts, they need to start with basic understanding have the makeup of their memberships and the broader climbing community. The survey is a step in that direction.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
