I am brand new to climbing and planning to start at muscatatuck this year. I was wanting to get some more info about it but since I don't see a way to search for members I've seen post things, was planning to dm, on the area page, I'll just do it here. Going to start with the easy stuff and work my way up. Strictly bouldering due to having no equipment just yet. I live about 40 mins east of indy. Thanks!
If you're east of Indy then Mad River Gorge might be a better choice. "Muskrat Attack" park kinda sucks and it's probably not much closer since MRG is right off of I-70. It's neat that there's any outdoor climbing in Indiana and if I lived within a few minutes of there I'm sure I would climb there a lot, but it's not a destination.
Ya I mainly want to check it out due to being brand new and having zero experience outside. I know it's not a place that gets frequent attention so I figure it would be a better place to embarrass myself. I know a setter for Hoosier heights that told me to check out the MRG. Its definitely on my list and I will be writing down these spots you mentioned as soon as I get home. I just want to get out and get climbing! I just need to learn how to find problems, clean them, and how to stay safe. Just trying to get my start in the whole scene. Thanks for the reply!
Blake, I agree with M.J to an extent. I think the MRG would be a good place to start because there's a pretty good concentration of easier problems but the easier stuff is not very well documented on Mountain Project and the boulders tend to be a little overgrown and chossy.
Also, I hadn't heard great things about Muscatatuck but I've been three times in the past few weeks and I actually like it much more than MRG. I've been filling out the MP entries with photos and descriptions so it's a lot easier now to find the problems and I'd definitely say it's worth a trip to at least check it out! The landing zones are flat and spacious so you won't have to worry about twisting an ankle when jumping down to your pads. If you have any questions about Muscatatuck, feel free to message me! Wherever you end up going, have fun out there!
Thanks victor! I really appreciate the support. I'm still learning and trying to figure out how all this stuff works. I have no clue what "chossy" means, I'm assuming it's bad tho. I'd like to start with muscatatuck and then go to MRG but I want to help with development and trail upkeep anywhere I can. I love the idea of developing new routes/problems. So any tips regarding that type of stuff would be cool too. Thanks for updating the area page also! Very helpful. Maybe I will see you out there!
Well I checked it out this weekend and this place is great! I still dont have a crash pad so I stayed off of alot but I was able to take down bron-y-aur, not sure how its pronounced. It was a great start despite the muddy footholds. Such a great location tho. Very spacious landing zones besides the strawberry fields. I will be back for sure! Also, why are there so little routes/problems on here? This place has thousands of possibilities!
