Is your insurance about to increase because of your "risky" behavior on The Gram?!?

My uncle who worked for insurance for a while told me that his insurance company actually rated people who state that they have been "technical rock climbers" for more than a few months as being lower risk than those who were simply "outdoor types"

Had to do with statistics showing that technical rock climbers tended to have fewer accidents in the outdoors than "normal" people due to certifications (even a gym belay card would count as a certification) and general assumption of the majority of technical rock climbers "knowing what they're doing" if they've survived long enough to continue with the sport.

I never checked into it and my insurance company has never asked so I'm not interested in providing any additional info.

I don't know what their policy is on mountaineering/climbing/etc but one option might be Health IQ (for life insurance).

I disclosed that I rock climb to my life insurance company when I got the policy.  They had a few follow-up questions, mainly focused on altitude.  It did impact the overall cost, but not by much.  Personally, I'd rather pay a smidge more and not worry about them not paying out based on me not being honest on the forms.

My supervisor told me she and her husband got rejected by three different insurers before someone told them that rock climbing activities negated their applications, and instead lied about climbing on another life insurance application. Not sure the companies, but they go climbing maybe 2 or 3 times a year at City of Rocks in Idaho, so they're not very active climbers.

The curious thing about life insurance is that you'll never know if they paid.

Prudential / Pruco was the cheapest way to go for covering rock climbing and diving for us. Quite reasonable still.

Same here.  We never got denied from any provider, but Prudential offered the best overall value after disclosing all hobbies (rock climbing, kayaking, caving, hiking, kitesurfing, scuba, snowboarding/skiing).

My life insurance policy excludes "roped mountaineering" so I guess I'm covered whenever I climb Honnold style.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
