Hi there,
I am wondering about bouldering in Bishop or Red Rocks next weekend. I have been to Bishop once (several years ago), but never to Red Rocks. What are your advices?
Are the areas and boulders easy to find in Red Rocks? Many climbers to join there during weekends?

Thanks in advance

Gaby

Both spectacular, both will have plenty of climbers to hang out with in the main areas. You'll have a great time at either, select them based on whichever is more convienient for you. Although if it might rain then head to Bishop.

Personally I'm partial to Red Rock, I love the style there. It'll also likely be a little warmer at Red Rock than Bishop (in general),

What is the style in redrocks?

Also, is there a good guidebook?

There's really good guidebooks for both areas. Southern Nevada Bouldering 2 for Red Rock, Bishop Bouldering for Bishop. I'd say the main area at Red Rock (Kraft) tends to lean toward a crimpy style, although this is abundant in certain areas of Bishop as well. But another thing is Red Rock usually has very reasonable topouts whereas there are some quite tall or scary topouts in Bishop (which is part of the appeal). But these things aren't certain, both areas switch it up and have variety. It's difficult to really tell you which to visit, they really are fairly similar overall.

One big difference that just came to mind is that the sandstone in Red Rock will allow you to climb more days than Bishop since the sandstone doesn't tear up the skin nearly as much as Bishop does. But that's not a big concern if you're only going two days.

If you've been to Bishop and haven't been to Red  Rock, perhaps you should try a new area!

Hard to decide in all honesty - both places offer an unique experience, different rock type and style. Personally, I prefer sandstone (and trad in all fairness) so I'm biased towards RR.

Red Rocks - Camping has never been an issue (for me at least), and it's close to stores if you need to grab anything. I personally didn't have a guidebook for bouldering, but most trails are well kept making areas not too difficult to locate. If you are looking for specific climbs a guidebook would be useful.

Bishop -  Camping at the pits is cheap and you can usually get a site. Happys/Sads are really fun and easier on the hands compared to the buttermilks (IMO). The people are always friendly in my experiences. I have a guidebook and it makes finding the climbs you want to do a lot easier.

Can't really go wrong with either place - maybe one thing to factor in is weather.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
