Tunnel or Last Chance for Spring Break??

Hey there,
I haven’t climbed at these areas since 2003 but remember the sunny side of the Tunnel and pretty much all of Last Chance Canyon being awesome.  My partner and I are planning on flying into El Paso and spending 5 or 6 days climbing steep sport routes, mostly 12’s and easy 13’s. Not interested in camping and can’t remeber if LC canyon was too far from Carlsbad to drive everyday so that might make the decision for us. Anyway,  looking for beta, opinions, guidebooks or any info anyone wants to give as to where we should go.  Thanks!  Jeremiah

Thanks Tim!  This is exactly the kind of info we need.  Since we’ll be escaping the cold I don’t mind being a little warm so I think we’re gonna try the tunnel and will retreat to the shady side r sitting bull if we get hot.  Thanks for the beta!  Jeremiah

It is more than 50 miles from Carlsbad to Queen, and then about 3 miles of bouncing on a dirt road with several gates. The drive is probably more like 90 minutes than 45.

For the sunny side of the Tunnel you really want a sunny day when it is 50 degrees or less in Alamogordo.  The shady side is pretty chilly if it is less than 70 in Alamo., but then that's great for sending.

You do not need 4wd for the Bat Cave, but clearance and momentum conservation is good. Again, time wise, it is a long drive from T or C.

Thanks for the great beta,  sounds like a week in Alamogordo might be the way for us to go.  Any guides to the sunny and/or shady side of the tunnel?

Is there a guide to the sport routes at hueco?

MP is by far your best resource for the tunnel.  There was a route only mini guide to Hueco published in 1990 or 91.  Paul Piana was the author I believe, and I have no idea where you would find one.  I don't think that any new actual routes went up since then.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
