Wow, did Fritz buy a mirror??

In fact, the only other bikepacker who possesses the requisite hardskills and pathetophilia neessary for an expedition of this magnitude actually declined to accompany me on the original trip.

Scratch that....your narcissism is truly astounding and a little sad. You'd be smart to walk away for good at some point.

Jesus cut the guy a break.   What will satiate the bloodlust? A public whipping?

Quit telling people to “walk away for good” etc.  I frankly have more of a problem with you Tom than Fritz.   Classic internet bully piling on more insults to a thread that’s already had more than enough.

Be better MP.   Fritz may have made some mistakes but based on how he talks I think he is a good man.   More than I can say for many on this thread who seem to have misplaced their humanity.

What used to be debate and reasoned argument in discussion forums has now become a zero-sum game where everyone has to get in their slap/punch/dig.

I thought his latest post showed much improved sensibility and honest humility. I commend his thick goat like skin and efforts to self improve. It doesn't change my argument against his initial actions, but it was never about the quality of his character.

Walking away for good is sound advice that he should take.  Encouraging someone who is starting to spin out of control and has addictive tendencies to continue this way of thinking and successive failures at self reflection is short sighted and foolish.

It's easy to jump on the "stop 'bullying' Fritz" bandwagon but kid gloves are not what's needed here. I encourage all the easily offended folks to just step away.

Try to stay focused, this is about narcissism in the adventure world that is out of control to the point of not caring about being stewards of an ethic and of the real world.

Possibly I've been too hard on Fritz as some of you have been upset by my posts. Maybe we should decide that MP is now a "Everybody Gets A Trophy" zone?? If you post a TR you automatically get a EGAT badge next to your name.

These are the rules: The OP can be as snarky and irreverent as possible and the only responses allowed are to be full of praise and congratulations. If you respond with equivalent snark and irreverency or, heaven forbid, some common sense, you shall be banned from MP until the end of time.

Ok internet you should be happy, you won.

Quit moving the goal posts.  Fritz just admitted he's had drug problems in the past.  He's admitted he has shortcomings and is trying to improve.  Less than a day later you're throwing his self-identified flaws back in his face?

REALLY DUDE REALLY?   Have some class.

It's not a bandwagon, and nobody is stepping away so you can kick a guy when he's down.

Stay focused?  Why is Fritz responsible for this "narcissism in the adventure world" blight that you're on a crusade to fix?  I'll post my Instagram account here and you can hop on and comment what a narcissistic drunkard I am.  Or would you prefer Honnold's, Anker's or Gadd's Instagram?  I hear those scumbags tell stories and post pictures of adventures to make a living too!

It is my sincere hope that the defense of narcissism does not become normalized here on MP. I see that might be a pie in the sky though.

Thanks for bringing in all those other guys including Honnold, that's a legit comparison (insert sarcasm) and the opposite of staying focused, I knew that would be hard for you.

Usage of all caps and valley girl talk always wins the internet but I'm the one who needs "class"? Got it.

Well Greg, I got a pretty good idea of what I'm dealing with now. Feel free to bring up more irrelevant and off topic fill.

Really?

Fritz is my friend, even though we've never met. So are a lot of you. Potentially, yourself also. I have zero idea what your life is like, either, after all.

So? No "kid gloves" here, not when I was talking to a friend I care about. Ask around. I am not in the habit of sitting down and shutting up, and Fritz got talked to. Not only that, he asked my opinions. I gave him my opinions, straight up.

Offline.

With love and (I hope) kindness.

Just back it off some, Tom. Say your say, but remember you're talking to real people, not just a screen.

Best, Helen

EDIT to add: and yes, I both laughed and cringed when I saw the "in fact...." statement. I think Fritz likely intended a compliment to his friend, but shot himself in the foot instead. I would take that statement as intending  that Fritz knows only one person who.... Cut him some slack, eh?

That was very articulate, Helen, thanks for putting in the time and thought to write that.

Thanks back.

Crap, I suffer from both a big ego, and, self worth that implodes down to zero, at times. Longtimers can attest that I go off the deep end, too, and I freely admit it.

But see? Climbing changes that. Hugely. To be a climber, at my age? Starting so late, trying new stuff, having my shit seriously shaken...by a 5.4??!? Okay....the girl isn't as pitiful as she thinks she is.

Maybe?

A tiny bit badass?

That, I think, is what this thing we do gives many, many of us.

Sure as hell holds me together.

That, and duck tape.

Start a thread, if you wanna explore ego and climbing....but please, make it general. This thread, is specific. And that, hurts. I know. Been there, had it done to me. Try not to do it myself.

Best, Helen

Do I get a trophy?

Would someone please flog me.

I've been watching this thread for a while now and I'll finally chime in. Fritz fucked up, he owned it, and he's done/ is doing what he can to repair the damage he has done. I don't know him personally but he seems like a good guy.

Posting about our failures and fuck ups provides even more valuable insight to others than "everything went great." A lot of people seem are being harsh on the publicity side of things,  but posting is part of his life. I'd be more concerned if he DIDN'T put this kind of stuff up and always painted a rosy picture of these trips to others. What we do is dangerous and can have very bad consequences. To publicize these incidents takes guts and I give him props for doing so.

Hey, guess what, everyone on this thread is a human being regardless of some of our "God Mode Codes" that we have put in.  I think the code is iddqd for DOOM.  Live your own dream.  Don't criticize others for living theirs.  Climbing is adventure, as is life.  I would love it if the internet evolved into a Parthenon style forum where we all truly spoke face to face about our interests and shared our opinions.  The self righteousness that 2019 is infected with, would surely dissolve when a real conversation with our peers was had.

BTW, MP's Guideline #1 states, "Don't be a jerk."   Words to live by.
