Mt. Washington winter ascents

Anyone interested in doing a partial presidential traverse on MLK weekend?  I was thinking a one day 1/2 tour from either direction.  Depending on wind speed of course.

Actually one of our climbing crew headed up there Thursday and either attempted Friday or today..at least as far as we know as yes, weather is insane!

Steve, has the biweekly climb materialized yet?

More or less yes, sometimes solo, sometime with a partner but I haven’t gone up pinnacle gully as of yet 

I'm new to ice and alpine but seriously trying to get into it.   I do have rock lead experience     I live in NJ near Philly.   I'm ready and willing with my own gear! 

A great Pinnacle option is to down climb Odell's.  Cut climber's left at the end of the third pitch.  Follow a ramp trending down toward Odell's.  Once in Odell's, trend skier's right.  You'll encounter the crux at it's shortest height, about 30' of moderate ice.   The rest is steep snow down climbing.  You avoid the slog at the top and can stay more sheltered from winds.  If you're climbing roped, some rock anchors and v-threads are possible.  

Re' Chris's advice...although I've never exited that way, from the description I'd say "be sure to go far enough on the ramp to get into "Odell's proper", as you'll pass over the top of "Odell's Right" ('right' looking up from the base) which has a fairly steep, but short, section.  Also, as with any 'traverse' take care with snow conditions / avalanche conditions as you cut nearly horizontally across the fall line.    

Anyone interested in a Huntington climb late next week or weekend?  Gully choice is dependant on conditions.

Conditions will be super funky next weekend, check the forecast. 

I agree the weather could really make things funky. Conditions always dictate the what/where/if I go, the good thing about being retired...

I think I am going to pull the plug on my trip.  With the current forecast from Rangers, I will wait until cold weather returns, hopefully next week.

Any input on the conditions for tomorrow? Ice conditions and avalanche danger in Huntington?

Should we revive this thread for this coming winter? Does it merit a new one this year as winter conditions come in more?

Tentative plans to arrive in North Conway Tuesday around noon, would like to climb up things and ski down them on Wednesday, maybe hit up crawford notch Tuesday afternoon. With the incoming snow and current warm up who knows how the ice will be, or the avy conditions. PM me if interested.
