Rights and lefts

Many MP descriptions seem to confuse their rights and their lefts. The Eldo Super Slab description, for instance, describes the latter part of the fourth pitch in the exact opposite direction one should climb in. Perhaps this person is a skier. I have no idea, but I will give them full credit nonetheless for their description if they manage to make the first ski descent of Super Slab, otherwise I'm a little bothered by the directions being completely reversed. While I can't think of more examples off the top of my head, there are several other route descriptions on MP I've seen where the directions were backwards.

To simplify it for those in need I have decided to break it down based on driving theory (America, not UK, since rights and lefts over there are backwards). Right on red, go ahead Fred. Left on red, good as dead.

I hope this helps everyone remember their lefts and their rights. It may save lives someday when someone gets off route on dirty, sketchy terrain instead of the obvious crack system they ignored in favor of faulty MP directions where they confused their rights and lefts. While I think this is a step in the right direction, this initiative can be improved by ensuring that the youngest legal age for MP signup is increased to 11 years old, so that we may have articulate directions without any kind of right/left impediments dirtying our precious internet, rock climbing resource.

I take issue with the fact that you feel the need to make this a political discussion, when this is an issue that plagues our nonpolitical climbing database. Classic Republicrat move.

your first mistake is to trust MP descriptions. the best you can hope for is a photo of the route but trusting your life to beta that some random jamoke on the interweb is not smart. I try to buy the real guide when possible and support guide book authors. If you are hooked on your phone buy rackup. relying on MP puts you in the position of trusting your life to either stolen info= bad karma or amature crap = possible epic....  I will use MP as a last resort when no other info available but if you are using as a free sorce to avoid paying for rack up or the print guide you deserve what you get.

I have guide books that cost 40+ dollars to get and have complete shit directions. Start route at half dead tree... go down the gully to a ledge that is 1200ft off the ground to start the 800ft climb back up and the ledge is 300+ ft long and has dozens of trees with dead and live branches.

If guide books you buy suck how can you expect free advice to be good?

You chose to get free advice. You got cheap advice. Are you sure you weren’t off route? Description has been there for many years. Don’t be a cheap ass. Go by the book.

Sometimes (read: always), in climbing, one has to take all of the information they have: what MP says, what the book’s written description say, what the photo/topo depicts, what your eyes are telling you, what your instinct and experience tells you, put it all together and take responsibility for your own fucking life.

Have fun out there.

Am I sure I wasn't off route? I don't appreciate the patronizing tone y'all are taking with me here. I was just trying to help clear some things up, but I guess no mediocre deed goes unpunished, am I left? I should have just right it be, but I guess this was expected.

But, yeah, I was definitely off route. Stupid MP said nothing about a clean face with pins, so I went up the unprotected licheny corner instead.

I don't see anything on this site where it says that's my job.

Was so ready for this to be a surfing thread and was sorely disappointed.

How to properly use the MP route descriptions via the app:

Step 1: Turn off phone
Step 2: Leave phone in vehicle
Step 3: Go climbing

*Advanced users may choose to purchase a guidebook, actually speak to another human, or forgo any information and make an adventure out of it.

Boy did this topic go into the toilet quickly!

If ya can’t figure out the right line using your own eyes maybe rock climbing isn’t the activity/hobby for you.

You’re right. There should be a warning to you millennials that are brave/foolish enough to stray from your “safe spaces.”  I propose a banner on the homepage. :-0

I’m the one trying to protect millennials from this scary & dangerous world. Gimme a little credit.

I've known plenty of sheltered Gen X fuckups and even more adventurous, worldly millennials. That's not a very strong card to play. Maybe you should get out more and meet the youngsters that are gettin' at it.

Lol! Just back from one of the most popular gear multis at Smith, and, on a Saturday in Roctober. 800,000 people there. "Where the hell is the second pitch on this thing? THAT??? Where do you put pro??" Didn't matter the experience level. Only people who had climbed the effer before had the beta.

Needless to say, it was stinkin fun!! Scared the crap outta me...do I get to stay in the club? I'm considering mixed climbing (ice mixed!!) this winter, is that crazy enough to qualify?

Best, Helen

This thread isn't about surfing (although that would've been better), it's about a problem that I'm passionate about, and everyone is talking down to me, like I'm some sort of inept child. If I took everyone's advice here, I would take up a lesser sport, like golf or bouldering. Yet, instead I will push on. Grown ass adults should know their lefts and rights (corrected), especially when they author directions on the internet for random people to follow.

Climbing isn't about adventure, it's about following the directions of those who came before you and beating their puzzle. How many people actually get first ascents or climb obscure routes? The pleasure comes from showing that you're as good or better than the first ascentionist and that can't happen if you're off route cause some jackass couldn't differentiate left and right.

I guess you were calling Patrick Vernon a jackass?  You started an entire thread to complain about the route description that no one has even verified whether  there is an error or not.    You insult him multiple times yet have done nothing productive.

You do know there is a simple process to edit route descriptions if you truly find an error, don’t you?   But, since the route description has been up for 18 years with multiple comments and no one has mentioned any problem with the route description I’m wondering who the jackass is?

Yeah, I hate it too when I'm going left and some douche-bag sponge-rider tries to go right--speed bump. Learn your lefts from your rights!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
