Cultural Appropriation of Rock Climbers

Our tribe is under attack. The spread of rock climbing to the normies has created an offensive and oppressive environment. It goes beyond dressing up as Alex Honnold for Halloween and into dark territory that destabilizes our culture. Our customs and traditions are open to all but a certain level of respect is required. I encourage you to ask yourself a few simple questions;

-Do I actually like PBR?
It's not appropriate to swig our swill and pretend like it's actually the best thing you have ever tasted, when really you just like the look of the can.

-Do I enjoy suffering and fear?
You can't identify with rock climber culture unless you actually love the suffering and fear. Rock climbing is not fun. If you are having fun, you are being offensive to our culture.

-Do I really want to climb?
Or do you just like to hang-dog one route and talk about it all day? Would you rather be watching Netflix?

-Do I actually understand what "Sendtober" is?
Are you aware that Sendtober is actually for climbing? Sendtober is not some joke to toss around with your friends, it's when friction is high and sending is more likely. Please don't misuse our vernacular to describe your Saturday escapades.

It's perfectly ok to celebrate our culture but to simply copy the parts you like and rearrange their meaning to fit your needs is unacceptable and offensive.

Thank you for your time.

Hi Traddie,

Its been too long since you posted last, I don't think Clint would approve of you appropriating his image, he is the epitome of the male visage while you, well, you know.

So climbers are a "Tribe"?
Guess this is your opening campaign speech to become the needed "Chief"?

My take is that "climbers" (whoever that includes?) social organization has not even made it to "loose federation". Some local groups optimistically call themselves a "coalition".

"rabble"

Is buying a 30 pack of rolling rock on clearance at the drugstore for 10 bucks count as offensive?

I have noticed when trying to find a climbing partner that a lot are more interested in the latest film festival or cause, then actually truly climbing. There are talkers, then there are doers.

Normally I abstain from writing on these....just lurking about getting some incite to the lunatics that surround us at the crag and in daily life.  But come fucking on.  You care enough to criticize the beer others drink?  You deplore those that climb for fun?  You even consider using the "word" "Sendtober" in conversation, and even go so far as to defend/correct its use?  You sir, are the worst kind of worst.  You're a breed of human that thinks that because you maybe learned about something before others that you have ownership of it.  You don't.  You don't own climbing, PBR, or pain and suffering.  You have no right to criticize those that pose no threat to you, others, or themselves in this realm.  Go yell at kids to turn down their music and to get off of the lawn your house is parked in front of, and reminisce about the good old days.  In between, climb on Stealth rubber with cams and Gri-Gri's and all of the other innovations whose development has been funded by the growing number of people interested in the same thing that you are---albeit for different reasons.

Although you were looking for insight, it appears one of our resident trolls sure managed to incite you!

It’s that kind of thinking that holds our sport back

Normally, I'd refrain from pointing out the painfully obvious...but I have a sneaking suspicion that our friend Alan here doesn't understand the interwebs.

I've given up on those two. Anyone who doesn't get homonyms and continues to use the incorrect word forever brands themselves as the kid in the back corner eating glue and not learning a damned thing.

After all, for all intensive purposes...... I have to go heel my soul now and find my lost beaners from the last repel I did.

No, that's real. You are the real deal. Nice work, keep it up. If you did the same thing with some Stone IPA you should be shot.

you know there are probably some climbing hipsters in PA that swear by the swill

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
