Submitting a bug report to ask that the font size be reduced on the mobile app for the comment border. Thanks for clarifying, Chad.

His drive and dedication is of course admirable and inspirational, but he's also kind of an asshole. It's possible he could be on the spectrum.

My thoughts were basically, "Why would he date her, she's terrible," From a q&a I attended though, she was put in the film to make Alex more relatable and to essentially be the "common person we can relate to" since Alex is so different. I thought Tommy Caldwell was the normal person who makes Alex more relatable. And the film crew.

Sanni and Alex clearly have different priorities in life. Doesn't mean either one is wrong, just means they have to figure out how to live with each other. I saw the movie with a group of climbers and none of us thought she was portrayed negatively. If Sanni and Alex both value the relationship then they'll figure out how to make space for each other, as they clearly already have.

Having sat with my girlfriend through the movie and her having the same view towards her SO soloing as they portrayed Sanni as having, I would say it is a fair portrayal of a concerned SO. I think the fact that they are still together and he says, "i love you" at the end speaks to the fact that they may butt heads on it, but they both want the best for each other in the end. If anything, the film makes Honnold look like a total sociopath and Sanni the concerned voice of reason who is getting dragged up climbs way outside her paygrade (seriously, simuling and the freeblast with a gumby?!).

Hey I know I'm not a woman but I'm just chiming in here to say I thought Sanni came off rather well. She is appropriately concerned for him and struggling with the knowledge that she can't demand priority in their relationship, which at the point we see it is still very young as compared with Alex's longtime goal of free soloing El Cap. And the accident is TOTALLY Alex's fault, in my opinion. She's a beginner and he's supposed to be teaching her.
If you watch interviews with Alex since the film came out, then you know that Alex is embarrassed at how callous he sounds in the movie when he tells her that he can't change his risk calculus for her. He feels shame when he watches it now, and he says that now their relationship is so much more serious, and her place in his life would definitely get more consideration if he had to make the same sort of decision now.

I don't think the film treated her poorly at all! I was so impressed with how she handled being in a relationship with Alex, who is (for better or worse) completely single-minded when it comes to climbing. The scene that stuck with me the most is when she asks him something like (paraphrasing here) "Would me asking you not to do the climb affect whether you do it or not?" and he very simply says, "No."
Alex is honest about his goals. Any person in a relationship with him needs to be ok with his honesty and his goals. And the film portrays Sanni as exactly that person. Lots of people in a relationship with a person like Alex might just be like, "Nah, I need more commitment" and peace. But she 1) accepts the person that he is, and 2) shows him that he can be that person, AND be happy in a relationship. She actually says that in the movie: something like "You can climb AND be happy. I make you happy right? So why throw that away?"

Interesting indeed. It is a documentary and the film did what it set out to do -- to document the main events around the main character during the 2 years of filming. I didn't think Sanni was portrayed unfairly. Question is why you think she "sucks" or see that she was portrayed as an "idiot" and treated like "shit." Could it be that you are too sensitive and overreacting? It's not a rhetorical question because I don't know the answer. I don't see it the way you did, so maybe there is something wrong with me.
P.S. The movie fascinated me, saw it twice already, and I was curious to read discussions on the movie. That's why I clicked on the thread link from the MP front page. Yeah, I didn't realize that this was on a "Women's Forum" either. Almost forgot there is such a thing. Is there a "Men's Forum" as well?

The original title of this thread was "Misogynist Jimmy Chin," (before the OP changed it) so that should help answer your question.

I thought the subplot of Alex and Sanni's relationship was nearly as entertaining as the climbing part of this movie. It seemed fair to both of them, and the movie did not sugar coat anything. They are both caring people, so it seems. Of course viewers must take any portrayal of their relationship with a grain of salt because only they know the entire story.
**Spoiler alert** The scene where they go shopping together to buy a refrigerator for their brand new home was one of the best parts of the movie IMO. It was very revealing about both of them, and quite funny as well.
