I Grew up in northern Wisco right in-between the fabled Michigan UP and Minni North shore Ice. Didn't get into ice climbing till I moved away but I'll be back this winter dec 14 - jan 9 and stoked to get on the home front! Obviously its wildly situational... and I know its early to be prime ice season but as I am looking at plane tickets now I wanted to get some local thoughts. Too early, don't bother? potential? If its a go what are generaly the first places to freeze up? or what are the must tries? Ive done the most research on MI but I know you Minnesotans have a claim, would love to here from you.
Have a passport? Head to the Thunder Bay Area and you will have ice. North shore of MN probably will have ice, but the Sandstone ice park will for sure. Munising will have ice to climb, but the lake will not be frozen to get to the island most likely. My rule of thumb is not to make a long drive before Xmas to Munising, but Canada is good to go by American Tgivving.
