How's the weather and temps in Spearfish for climbing in early August?  The MP graph shows a big popularity dip for this month so just wondering if it's too hot.  Many thanks.

The dip might be due to a couple factors.  One is that it will be hot, but depending on the time of day shade can always be found.  However, the Sturgis Motorcycle rally is around that time which means spearfish canyon will be packed from one end to the other with bikers that turn the entire highway into one big parking lot.  The noise level will be beyond annoying.  Also you will not find any available camping or hotels.

Generally it's still pretty warm here that time of the year. Mid 70's to Mid 80's but cooler than June/July. With a little planning you can find a shaded crag pretty easily. A lot of the areas transition between sun and shade all day. Sturgis bike rally is going on during the first fully week of August so you'll have to compete with bikers riding through the canyon all day, slow traffic.

You can find yourself some free camping off some of the forest service roads near crow peak/Tinton road. Plus the noise level is not that bad. You're high enough off the canyon floor comparable to boulder canyon noise

Also law enforcement will be at 10 times the normal level so any hippie looking dudes from Colorado in a late model Subaru can count on getting stopped and searched.

From personal experience, you're not gonna get searched if you look like a "hippie" or if you're out of state.

Spearfish is over 15 miles from Sturgis and sees no where close to the same level of biker traffic.

Thanks for the beta guys.  A motorcycle rally and extra traffic sounds like something I'd like to avoid.  I think I'll shoot for early September instead!

I was in Spearfish a couple weeks ago, on a few 85+ days, and it's all about hitting the right spots at the right times... longer approaches with more elevation had more breeze, and there was always shade if you picked the right side of the canyon for the time of day... also, there is a lot of water access at the base of the canyon to cool off in between sessions.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
