Summer sport crags near Asheville?
|

Hoping to clip some bolts late June - does one need to gain elevation to beat the heat? Or are there shady spots to put a rope up? |

The New River Gorge. NC is not the land of moderate sport routes |

Chattanooga but not in the summer |

Hidden Valley is 1:45 from Asheville. It’s not ideal, but it is pretty high and can be shady from the trees |

There are also a handful of small crags very close to Asheville that, due to limited access, are not documented anywhere; if you can hook up with some locals they'll likely be in the know. Otherwise, the suggestions above are a good start, but maybe add Hawksbill in Linville Gorge. |

850 routes are listed in Southern Pisgah Rock and Ice (pre- order www.grounduppublishing.com in print this summer). All areas are less than an hour from Asheville. Most are trad but some sport or mixed routes thrown in. |

I'll throw ship rock out there for being a decent summer destination, but not for sport |
