Yes but what I don't have a sense of is if there is a vast silent majority who don't care. The ones who care are the ones who will be vocal.   I'm not saying I believe one thing or the other, I just have no idea of the answer.

The ones who care are millenial, PC social media junkies with no life away from computers and online personas.

Just a guess.

In real life she would have told him to suck a big one and punched him in the face and they would have climbed together the next day.

Clearly a ton of people care. Lots of posters on instagram called for Joe to be immediately fired, and another few hundred said they were upset when he got canned.

What I thought was interesting was that everyone went straight to BD -- they seem to be the acknowledged 800 lb gorilla.  I thought it would have made much more sense to raise it with La Sportiva first -- both climbers were sponsored by them

They don't care about the brand specifically, they just care that somebody is in trouble and they want the schadenfreude. Those who supposedly care probably just pose with their BD this or that and will buy the next overpriced gadget regardless of the athletes.

Funny, I got the impression that most of the people defending Joe were defending his actions as a joke and totally okay.

Side note- I doubt more than a handful of BD athletes are making $50k. Hell, I doubt many are pulling $25k. Most probably get free gear and a trip or two a  year.

You might right - perhaps it’s some combination of the two, but I would call that misguided more than I would call it misogynistic or colonialist.

Stirring the pot here. First I have no intention of defending Joe Kinder for bullying or fat shaming, and it shouldn't be surprising that he is looking for work right now. But aren't  all three of these climbers are just using this to forward their own agendas?  If someone says something mean about you online, can't you turn of your phone? Last Thursday the Salathé Wall was freed in 13 hours, something none of these climbers are currently capable of.  When have any of these climbers provided a compelling story or adventure? One is known for cutting down an 1000 year old tree, one for cheating on her spouse in a flawed marriage, and one went to Columbia for writing and can only write about herself, climbed the first ascent of multiple fully prepped routes gifted to her.

Once you realize how self-centered they all are, you truly realize the pettiness of it all.

Honestly, I don't know that much about any of the parties involved. But I do know that the victims of bad behavior don't have to answer for their own shortcomings as people as if that's some kind of excuse for bullying or stalking. That's the same attitude that has kept, just for example, the police asking questions about whether rape victims were "promiscuous" rather than just investigating the damn rapes.

You're right in general, but degree matters for most people. Do you sympathize a bully getting bullied as much as a non bully getting bullied? A convicted murderer getting shanked in the prison vs an innocent person?

It's pretty clear that the person losing the most here is actually the woman in the bikini.

SD is basically saying "eww I'm not that woman"

F*** your instagram climbing celebrities.

Too bad. I always admired his psyche, strength and humor. The way he floated across his FA of Bonefish is one of my favorite climbing shorts.

I guess I’m one of the silent. I just looked on the BD website and was surprised to see 84 ambassadors listed. At $50k a pop (is that reasonable? $25k? $?????k) that’s a fair amount of money for any company. It just doesn’t seem like the payoff for BD would outweigh the payout. But i freely admit I’m basically ignorant and probably dead wrong about this. Again sorry for the thread drift.

No way more than a couple are pulling 25k. I’d be surprised if any are making 50k. Potentially Honnold.

Uhh, no.  As part of all this, Sasha reached out to the woman and they are working together to combat body image issues on social media.

I personally am not a huge fan of SD's unabashedly commercial approach to climbing celebrity; she is basically the mainstream "pop singer" of climbing.  But Kinder was a complete douche who definitely knew better than to do this kind of stuff as a pro climber.  He should have been canned back with the tree chopping episode.

"Reaching out", "touch base", " let's collaborate", "get some synergy", "is there bandwidth?". Corporate buzz words for a corporate stooge. Sasha et al are just "ambassadors" to try and sell stuff and an image. Sasha's is Pretty in Pink, Joey's is Skateboarding is not a Crime. It's all so fake and the drama is the only reason alot of us are even acknowledging their existances.

Climbing was a lot better before there were any sponsored climbers, period.

There was an article somewhere a few years back that discussed salaries for pro climbers.  Honnold, Sharma, and Hill all make >100k.  Unless you're talking about how much Honnold specifically gets from just Black Diamond.

Are you sure you are not talking about Woods instead? I hear Honnold makes well into the 6 figures (closer to a 7 figure) these days. I don't necessarily envy him though, "these days" can be quite short and on the job hazard quite high.

It's hard to make a lot of money from a hard goods maker, not when the only big moneymakers w/ a prominent logo is the sponsored draw.

Dude donates a significant portion of his earnings as well through the honnold foundation. He is the type of climbing role model that should make a fuck load of money.

All good route names........... :0

On a side note, I recently saw "skateboarding is not a crime" spray painted under a bridge (along with all the other graffiti) in a drainage canal where kids skate.
Just for a moment I considered painting "No, but graffiti is." underneath it.

Black Diamond uses people...
And when you’re not useable, you are tossed out like a used piece of TP.
