Music at the cliff

I love music just as much as anyone else.  That being said, I find it obnoxious when people decide to jam their tunes when they are not alone at the base where several different parties are climbing and trying to pay attention to the lead in the party.  Thoughts?  

I think in general that is annoying, not just at the cliff.

But hey, when I was younger I thought everybody loved Black Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio and Judas Priest.

Obnoxious.  Music belongs in the gym, not the crag.

 I was doing my solo laps at Deer Leap one afternoon and some dude was rope solo aiding a 5.6 with a PBR in his chalk bag and had a radio cranking at the base in the middle of his junk show at the bottom of the cliff. on my 3rd lap I simply turned it off for him. did a half dozen more laps and then reminded him to take ALL his emptys with him when he left.....    In general the Only music that I like  in the woods is the kind that you make youeselfs..  Putting your ear buds in and cranking the tunes makes you miss out on a lot of the really cool things out there in nature...  cranking your phone through a speaker imposes on anyone else who is trying to enjoy the outdoors and possibly escape all the digital intensity of our modern lifes for a few hours...

For those of us who spend the majority of the times in the quiet wilderness,

That being said, not for every situation 

I walked up to a crag about a month ago to find a group of 6 taking up the entire wall and blasting music. When I approached, and said hi, they continued, as if they were still the only ones at the crag. I walked up to the top of the crag to drop my TR solo rope and tried to yell down to them, as a courtesy warning of rope. They could not hear me. Nor could they hear each other yelling take, off belay, etc. It was a total shit show on many levels. I think it's not only selfish but can be rather unsafe. I listen to music all the time, but I assume that not everyone wants to listen to what I do, AND, that not everyone wants to hear music when they climb. And it's not limited to climbing...lots of hikers also blast their tunes as they walk on trails. I guess being out in nature and getting away from it all has different meanings to different people. It's alot like having a dog at a crag....yep...opened that can of worms!

It is well know crag courtesy to not play music if other are in the area, at least not without asking. Most people doing it are actively choosing to be selfish.  It honestly doesnt bother me as it is rare anyone has speakers loud enough to put out significant noise.  i do however hate the blasting music at the local rock gym.   hard to hear commands.

I took the gentle approach last time by gently kicking the player off the block.

totally agree. I´m a part time musician and music teacher. But when i´m climbing i usually don´t want to listen to music :) 

I will cut your balls off if you are playing music at the crag I am at...

Music is totally fine, the climber on the hardest line gets to pick the tracks, it provides motivation for the weaklings among us!
