That's a different level of paranoia then what we are talking about here. If the government asked, as I did in this situation, I would say "no" because of their power but when it's just a friendly climber interested in what I have or who I am I would invite them in to see where the "magic" happens. This climber is no threat such as the government is.

There was nothing "just" about it. Given how much you wrote on the interweb for all to read, I think the guy made the right call. I wouldn't have let you see it either.

You mean like this guy?

If he asks to see your van, you should probably say yes...

Haha, no, like this guy ;).  Might change my handle to #friendlygovernmentclimber.

p.s. I know what’s on your rack because I’m watching you, bros.

I think it's likely that you look and/or sound like a creepshow.  I wouldn't want some creep pokin' around in my space either.

Isn't asking to see the van the ice breaker itself?!

NO.

I guess that explains some things.

How about a more obvious possible reason? Perhaps the guy is intensely private.

Also, look at how the OP approached the van dweller - "Can I look inside your van?" No introduction, no why, no attempt at alignment, no attempt to be on common ground before asking.....

He wasn't a celebrity, whats to be private about? I didn't stick my head in the van, I just asked him to see it when he was standing outside of it.

There's definitely a lack of willing social interaction in our society, people just walk around all day, say nothing, never say "hello" or just talk to a random stranger for no reason. Maybe it's a Cali thing? I have has so many positive things happen to me just because I had the gumption to just start talking to someone, I think all'ya'all could use a little of this gumption, maybe turn those frowns upside down :) XOXOXXO

That's not for you to say. Your opinion is irrelevant.

I didn't stick my head in the van, I just asked him to see it when he was standing outside of it.

And he said no, and he explained why. *You* were the one who troll-complained about it on the net.

Maybe you should just be quiet now.

Maybe he found you off-putting. Not so different from MP actually.

Maybe it's a you thing.

Well, maybe you should see it more like seduction.

"Hey, me, you, sex, go?" is not a great icebreaker.

You wanna get in there, well do your homework first.

I agree and I think you raise an important point.   Things are becoming very "walled off" and kind of predictable.  No one throws caution to the wind anymore.   Engaging in random acts is a lost art.

Another scenario you see often is n00bs who are scared to ask questions in person at the crag or the gym(in my case) , then they go home and ask their questions on the internet anonymously to anonymous people. Or even the semi-seasoned climbers who see something fucked up at the crag and wait to get home on the internet to bitch about it.

Maybe the guy heard Tradiban ask to GO inside of his van.

On the contrary. Random acts like larceny and assault seem to be thriving.

If you find me so off putting, maybe you should stop reading my trolls? I would hate to hear that you had a heart attack on account of me.

What is to be lost by letting a stranger see inside the van? Privacy? What privacy? It's a van with windows and the door was open!

It's the attachment to the van as a "home" that I find interesting. I feel like this person was crying out for help and that the MP community should be there to help him. It's no different from a hobo guarding his box on the street with an broken broom. Sad.

I drove over the road for Werner for awhile. That's a crappy way to make good money. The only people to approach the truck were crack whores and losers trying to sell stolen porn DVD's. I chased them away.

Did he have a puppy?

Maybe you're too old for ice cream?

(sorry...)

Sounds like an unfriendly brat. He could have said kept it simple and just say " sorry dude I don't like ppl looking in here" or make up a thousand other quick excuses like " my chicks panties are Ll over the place she's folding clothes sorry but no. ".  The sermon he gave is what gets me. If he was racking up 30ft away from vehicle with back turned to it and some some dirtbag comes up to open doors and gawks into the van then the lecture speech would make sense.

A little more than a year ago in Baja I was talking to a guy camped at a surf break about his awesome Sportmobile-style buildout van. I said, "Do you mind if I look at the inside?"

"No problem," he said. "Go ahead."

I pushed back the curtain that was hanging in the door and there I met his wife, wearing only a thong bikini bottom.

So not everyone is unfriendly, Tradiban. You just hang out in the wrong places.

This is all baseless assumptions in that you don't really know how the conversation unfolded.  All you know is Tradiban's take, and that generally doesn't go very far.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
