Yes, certainly in the conversation for climbing nearby....but not remotely a World Class city.

LA is essentially an overgrown strip mall.

I've lived in both SF and LA. Actually love them both for different reasons. If you want to argue which one is world class or not, you'd probably want to look at which city gets the most visits from global travellers. That would make NYC #1, Miami #2, Los Angeles #3, and SF #5 after ORLANDO at #4. http://tinet.ita.doc.gov/outreachpages/download_data_table/Top%20Cities%202016.pdf

For climbing I think LA definitely rules that group.

Nah bro, visits don't mean crapola....Orlando is trash but it has Disney World...and having Hollywood doesn't make you world class but does get a lot of tourists.

I have lived in SF and Tokyo, visited London, Rome, NYC and Chicago....LA fucking sucks.

But, I will give you it has the best cragging nearby....However, 4 hours to Yosemite puts SF WAY above LA, imo.

Pretty good year round climbing in Vegas but that place is backwater and has few international travelers!

Don't get me wrong, I really love SF and much of the Bay Area. But comparing SF, as in the City proper, to the entire LA metro area is ridiculous. I live on the Westside of LA. I can ride a bike to the beach easily. I'm a couple blocks away from great restaurants. LAX is about 15 minutes away. I can actually be climbing on a decent local crag in 15 minutes. I can ride a subway to downtown for meetings. But if you want to point out that the San Fernando Valley is full of strip malls and tract homes, I'll agree and point out the entire REST of the Bay Area except for SF and Marin is mostly tract homes and strip malls.

Go to my homeland, Canada. Vancouver is an AWESOME city, for climbing, Squamish is near by. Canmore is also amazing, best place for an Alpinist to live in NA IMHO.

No Trump, no guns, free health care for residents

I think a lot of us would LOVE to move to Canada. Not sure how welcome we'd be, en masse.

A couple of decent neighborhoods does not a world class city make. Downtown LA has improved, but only very recently. Downtown SF has been great for 150 years (baring an earthquake apocalypse or so...).

Architecture, History, Age, Culture, Food Culture, Scenic Beauty or other balancing factors (ie no one would call Tokyo a beautiful city but it is utterly world class in other ways).

Sorry dude, the best of LA is decent. SF and Marin/Tiburon etc is a whole 'nother league, imo.

Canada is great that's why you live in Fresno? I love how Canadians who have moved south are always preaching about how awesome Canada is!

The one-way rivalry between San Francisco and Los Angeles is always cute.

Love your city... Can't wait to visit it again soon.

And there you have it....kinda explains it all. :)

Now, to be fair, native San Franciscans have a bit of a chip on their shoulders....because newbies don't get it or know SF well enough to tell the difference. :P

AndrewArroz, you hit the nail on the head with the "one way rivalry" comment. I lived a stone's throw from San Francisco for 35 years and knew the City and the Peninsula very well. Now I live outside of LA. I love LA. Great art, great food, great beaches that you can actually enjoy from outside of your car. Nearby, from the area where I live, great hiking, winter alpine stuff, and access to lots of good rock. I like to visit SF but I love living here.

Malibu Creek is pretty close too?
