Right of course - swipe left & right in a endless, unordered gallery of pictures is going to be much, much better. Of course - actually you know what they should change the download on Google Play & instead to put there a bunch of screenshots.

This is kind of what I mean - this thread radiates bad faith....

You're missing the point that the new app is a significant step towards much lower usability and is arguably much worse in some specific use cases than the app it replaces.

For what it's worth it's a free service and I'm sure they're working hard to make it better. I'm also sure they didn't fuck it up on purpose. Let them work out the tweaks before hating so hard? Maybe even thank them or something, I don't know

I suppose that if someone came out with a car that had no steering wheel, not self driving, let's say you turned right by singing little bunny Foo Foo and left by singing the banana counting song. Would you criticize it as being low functioning? Or would that be bad faith.

Actually, I may have just invented the best car ever.

Stephen, the old apps had the tweaks pretty much worked out.

I agree with pretty much all the critique, but would also like to point out that MP is NOT a free service. It was, but now exists as an advertising and marketing vehicle for REI. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but it is disengenuous to claim that it is a free service.

I guess I was using the common usage of the word free, as in you don't pay for it. What, do you want a bunch of people to spend their days 9-5 making a service for you and not get paid? Surely they have to make their nut somewhere, and it's not coming from the user, because it's a free service. Surely they have rent and food payments just like the rest of us. I'd rather have ads than pay. Yeah, these issues are less than ideal, but seriously, they'll work it out. Maybe there is a way to bring these to attention without just saying "wow you guys suck", I dunno.

If you think that the current service isn't worth the trade-off of watching ads then, you know, don't use it?

I totally agree with everything that has been said here.  My biggest issues in order of annoyance are as follows:

1. have to download a whole state, I was even annoyed with the old app because I'd have to download the whole Wasatch front area instead of sub areas in UT.  This is just worse, I should be able to download anything from the lowest level of area all the way up to the whole state if I want to.

2. can't download photos for a whole area becasue "download is too large".  I know I have plenty of space available on the phone, and that I have plenty of data available, why is it up to the app to decide how much I can download or not?

3. not being able to use the back button is just ridiculous.

I agree with all of this.

It's free to us but that's not a good argument for a bad app.

Think about it this way, mp has a database that is vast. I don't think there is anything even close for second place. It's so good that they effectively have a monopoly. It's also making money. I realize that Nick probably doesn't snort coke off a hooker's ass most nights but I doubt he's working at Denny's to keep this site up and running.

I also don't blame him.  I genuinely think he's trying to do the best for this site. So take it as feedback, fix the app. It has been better, make it only  that good again. There is literally no replacement, paid or free.

It all depends.

If the climbing area is covered by rakkup, you definitely have options. It is, actually, quite amusing to compare identical areas on rakkup and mp.com.

If you climb at Red River Gorge, both the online database and the app are way better than mp.com

I’m sorry to complain but I thought that’s what this “feedback” sub forum was for?

Yes, it is.

However feedback can be seen as part of a spectrum. On one end, you have pointless, non-funny whining, or venting. On the other end you have feedback, which loosely defined is an articulated piece of constructive comments aimed at improving a situation of concern to the person expressing the feedback.

Most of the time, things fall somewhere in-between. This thread so far falls somewhere half-way, with valid points being made but also a lot of what seems to be mostly venting from people who feel entitled to a personalized app responding to the dot to their own conception of what is a climbing app and how it should behaved, would also not have to pay for it nor would want any adds in it even though those ads may be in the form of a split-second splash screen at startup with perhaps discret mentions of some outdoors company in the top banner of the associated website.

Ideally (thought that's optional and probably wouldn't elicite too much rage if this feature is omitted), it should detect dog poo in the vicinity when used at the crag and override the smell with a slight vanilla scent.

Funny thing, I was testing out some of the complaints here, because I had issues with navigation in the app (mainly everyone's favorite, being thrown all the way out by the back button). I think the back button is confusing because it doesn't behave consistently. If I stick to navigating with the hierarchical menus, it works great. I think there is a design conflict between the expanding and collapsing outline style list, and the function of the back button. Nick and his minions (i hope he has minions) should look at these complaints and get a more intuitive interface figured out.

I also started messing around with the bookmarks and they are great! Except there is a repeatable bug. On the home screen, if I touch the word "Bookmarks", the app crashes. happens every time with my iPhone SE.

Agree. The back button (both the upper-left arrow and the Samsung s7 Edge lower right back button) behave differently depending on how you used the menus. it's very strange and unpredictable.

My frustration: I download the photos, but I can’t see them when I’m in airplane mode on the iPhone. I deleted the app and reinstalled as instructed. It worked until I quit the app. Then back to not showing the pics in airplane mode. Been happening since day one. I give up.

That's bizarre. Are you on an iPhone or Android? I have an older Android with an earlier version of the app on it and the pictures work offline fine. Perhaps your phone is somehow utilizing storage in the cloud? I have mine putting pictures on a card now that my installed memory is maxed out. I have to make sure to check it from time to time, as when the app updates it will annoying revert to internal storage.

I agree, the new app is truly horse shit.

I'm not a 100% positive but I THINK that the mention "but I can’t see them when I’m in airplane mode on the iPhone" may indicate use of an iPhone

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
