Did a few forum searches, but couldn't find the beta I was looking for, perhaps one of ya'll could help?

Me and 3 non-climbers are looking to do a night of car camping around the lake george area. No RVs lol, but certainly not backcountry camping. Something where we can drive up and camp. The state campgrounds are closed this time of year. Any suggestions? I heard shelving rock road? Any other suggestions around Lake George or the general southeastern ADK area?

Shelving Rock road is probably your best option.

Don't park on the road of Shelving Rock Rd, but rangers are often understanding of commando camping in your car at trailheads (don't set up a tent unless you're following the DEC rules though!)

Shelving Rock has about a dozen designated campsites along the road; they have signs with numbers on the road, so are easy enough to find, and are a pretty short walk from the road, but if they're taken they're taken, so there's some risk of not being able to find an open site, particularly on a weekend.  They are also primitive, so no picnic tables or water, and the only facilities are a couple outhouses on the trail from the climbers' parking lot going down to the lake, maybe a 5 minute walk.

It was recently suggested here (post #7) that one could get by with camping at Roger's Rock CG during the off-season.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
