I made a 3D map of bihedral crag I wanted to share
|
|
So I have been working on this project for the last few days. Left side didn't turn out well so this is just upper tier and riviera. Let me know what you think, or if you would use something like this in the future. Thanks! Sketchfab link to 3d bihedral. Edit: Answering some questions: -The way it opens not facing forward is unfortunately due to sketchfab, If I make it face forward, the horizontal mouse pull makes it spin like a clock. The way its set up allows you to rotate it instead. The best way around this (for now) is to just click on an annotation then zoom out. -I am new to the forums and I appreciate all the compliments, I have been using MP for climbing for awhile, I need to read the forums more! -I am a GIS graduate student at DU so I have some background knowledge on making this, along with access to some expensive programs, but most of this project I had to figure out as I went, drawing on a 3d mesh was a lot more difficult than I anticipated. Sketchfab also limits annotations to 20 so I wish I could have every route its own button but for now it works well. -Approach routes is a great idea I will keep this in mind as I make more |

Very cool! |

That is spooky cool! How long does something like that take to build? Nice work! (My only suggestion would be some kind of motion-sickness warning...you can really fly around this image and I found it a bit digestionally unsettling. This comment is meant only to be funny. This is an astonishingly cool thing.) |

Super sick man. |

Little more info. I took my drone up to the crag at 5:30am or so a few days ago and snapped about 450 pictures. Didn't want anyone to be on the crag when I was flying and early morning has good light. Made a point cloud and mesh with pix4d software and edited the map in meshlab and Sketchfab. I also have blob rock I am putting together. |

Wow, very cool! |

Damn that is cool. Solid work. |

Awesome man! Been wondering when someone would put something like this together. Any way you can adjust how that page opens? Starts with a top down/aerial view, but might not be the most intuitive to people that aren't used to navigating 3D environments. A front facing view might be nicer initially...Keep up the great work! |

Awesome!!! Would definitely be my "go-to" topo if available. |

Nice work. Would make a pretty cool digital guidebook for an area. I've had thoughts about doing this in rivers for a project that I'm working on regarding fish habitat but don't have the technical knowledge. Did you just pick this up and run with it or did you take a class of sorts? |

Dylan B. wrote: You could show the Bastille with multiple parties in line, several on the route already. Canal Zone with dogs and babies... Seriously, looks like the future. 3D approach maps would be great also. |

Brian, looks like you are a brand new user to the MP community. Welcome! For this to be your first ever post, you sir..... get an A+. For all of you long time lurkers out there on the forums, I expect the rest of you to bring these sorts of goods when you make your first ever post. Brian, in seriousness, I had a couple questions about your project, and I just sent you a direct message/email. Thanks |

This is really cool. Though it is not the first time I have seen something like this. I use drone lidar at work for a lot of civil/ environmental engineering work. We use drone surveys like these to help survey mining quarries as well as help with dam rehab projects. It sounds like you have your photogammetry workflow figured out for the most part but you should take a minute to check out Autodesk's Recap software. It has a steep learning curve but I think the accuracy you get will surprise you. We are usually able to get a resolution of a hundredth of an inch from 50 feet in the air. To put that in perspective we can model the bolts on a lightpost once we have the point cloud data. Though you might need to upgrade the rest of your hardware/computer to survey entire cliffs like this. This also lets you see the model using a VR headset, which is pretty cool. |

Nice job though, I personally find it pretty cool. |

all the gold stars and A+'s for this |

Wow, really cool! |

This is very cool. I work in subsea lidar and it's nice to see some 3D scans of something I'm more passionate about! |

dayummmm. this shit would save me hella time~ |
