In light of the recent thread, "Shop at your local mountain shop even if it's more expensive," I thought it'd be interesting to get a rolling list of our MPers favorite local mountain shops. One, to give a shout out to those shops that still do it right and appeal to the masses while keeping it local. And two, to maybe bring to the attention of travelling climbers, skiers, runners, mtbers, etc. that there are still great places to stop in, gear up, and get some local beta outside of the REIs of the world. I understand that there are some REI staff that are knowledgeable and the point of this isn't to discourage folks from going to the big box stores so keep that chatter to a minimum.

So what are some of your favorite local shops out there? Whether it's climbing, mtbing, backcountry skiing, etc...

The Trailhead in downtown Missoula, MT.  Amazing folks serving the community with an excellent selection of gear.

Unfortunately Pipestone Mountaineering fell to the big box stores.

Does Gear Coop count?  The have a brick & morter store in OC that employs a bunch of climbers, they have a bouldering area there in the store, stock tons of gear, have an excellent selection of shoes on hand, have a selection of close-outs/discounts, and host beer & bouldering Friday nights.

Rock and Resole should be on the list but Neptune is a a long way from where it used to be.  Sure, they don't have that "going out of business" vibe like they did a yr ago, but nowhere near worthy of the list.

I'll go ahead and throw Alpenglow Sports in Lake Tahoe in the mix. Especially for backcountry skiing gear but they have all the necessities for climbing and usually some pretty solid local beta regarding conditions.

Strawberry Station at Lover's Leap. Doesn't get much better.

Stop on in and you'll know why.

Eric, re your comment about Neptune in Boulder. Just wondering if you have been in there lately and, if so, what was your negative experience. I legitimately and politely want to know--not trying to start any kind of war here. You may very well have noticed something I haven't and should have, maybe in the area of service, expertise, or something? They are fully stocked with about anything you could want for the Flatirons to El Cap (as far as I could see) and they apparently are expanding even more to build a coffee bar and small indoor wall. I saw it when the shelves were empty last year and it was awful. To me, the turnaround with these new local owners has been like night and day. Anyway, just wondering...(again, legitimate, polite, curiosity).
