Looking for a bit of input from anyone who has skied Lassen's southeast face pre-road opening. Also interested in conditions, if anyone's been up there recently.
Day 1 (Sat): Enter park from the south and obtain permits. Planning to park near visitor center (or as far as we can get on road), skin the road up to Lake Helen area and camp (likely utilizing the cutoff after Sulphur Works to shave off some distance); Day 2 (Sun): Ascend the peak and descend southeast face, return to camp and back to car.
Does this plan make sense? Anything we may be missing? Appreciate any input.
Unless you are set on overnighting at Helen I would just day trip from devastated area. You can ski the South east bowl, go back up and then ride the Northeast face back to the car. If you do start from the visitor center you should check the plow status to make sure you are not walking on dry road
Depends on where you are coming from, but devastated is a good option. Great skiing. Long drive if you are coming from Chico area. Let's you ski without packs, always a +.
