Yosemite camping

Heya, does anyone know where there is any free camping outside the park.  I have a friend visiting from Australia and is staying til the end of the month.  We want to camp outside the park until I have to leave then he can finish up at camp 4.  Looking for an area where there may be other climbers but not necessary.  We will be van camping!  Thanks for any info.

The pullouts near El Portal is probably your best bet.
