I posted this falesly thinking people might be upset that any climber , regardless of the manner used, would take it upon his/herself to write on a climb So I now know that the lcoal community thinks it's ok to write, in chalk, the grades we think are apporpriate to a climb. Thanks for clarifying this for me. . So you have spent more time ranting about this topic on the internet than finding out what to rant about? That's pretty rich. I mean, we can all have a pretty good go at eachother if we can just get our facts straight on what we are arguing about. Chalk or paint? It is really hard to draw the lines in the sand until we know if there is any sand to draw in. Man, I hope there is some sand to draw in.

That's it. I'm drawing the line now. Step over it and I'm going to reach into your chest, rip your heart out and let you watch me eat your still beating heart. But I do want you to know that I mean this is the most sincere and loving way.

This is probably one of the best MP threads ever. Gold over and over again. Outrage. Pedantry. Total Waste of Godamn Time. Love it. Good work, Internets.

Thanks for clarifying this for me. . I think you misinterpreted it. What I read in the responses was that they thought the scale and drama of your post was way out of proportion to the offense if all that happened was someone wrote in chalk on a rock. The first question everyone asked was "was it paint?" because if it had been I think you'd have had a hundred supporters. But if you get so upset over someone scribbling in chalk (and I agree it's kind of obnoxious) on a rock it just seems a bit out of balance.

Brian in SLC wrote:This is the route?: So...its a bolted sport route ending in chains? With holds covered in chalk? What was the issue again? I just checked MP about the route after seeing this? Now I'm thinking jersey girl is a troll. Is she serious? Defacing nature and all that?!?! Did you look up and see the route and rest of the wall? If this was some traditional line back in the canyons, maybe I'd be more sympathetic, but come on now...look at this photo, you have to be kidding me

I was gonna scope out something at willow springs ..... and my curiosity ate at me ....and then got the better of me ....and I had to stop and look lol .How could you not know this was chalk? I could tell from 20 feet away it was chalk. I'm skeptical you saw it. It took me about 1:30 to scrub the majority of it off the wall with a brush ... spray some water on the brush ... give it another pass ..then pick up a hand full of dirt and rub it into the spot. Now it looks like the other 1000 faded chalk stains on Sweet Pain. Why you didn't just try and wipe it off and be done with vs ranting about it ...who knows?

I'm pretty sure I remember seeing this same misspelled commentary at base of the route the last time I climbed at sweet pain a couple years back, so look forward to having it written again by the same guy every time it's washed off. Also, glitter gulch is a 5.10c.

jersey girl wrote:What gave you the right to spray the fact that you think that Glitter Gulch is "10.c" (btw I think you means 5.10c) by defacing the start of the climb by writing the grade on it? If you want to call it 5.10c than do so here, NOT on the rock itself. Not only is it an eyesore, it might be dangerous to a new 10c leader. I was told this one done by a local and IF that's true, it saddens me deeply; IMHO It's unethical and pompous. Dammit! I sent that thing when it said 10.c at the bottom...I figured that was way harder that 5.15.....and I was just about to spray on 8a.nu - thanks for letting me know "you means 5.10c" before I embarrassed myself.

New thread idea.... "To the local asshole who shouts loudly online and doesn't do shit about the 'marring' of Glitter Gulch." Has a ring to it, no? Props to Nick for getting out and allowing curiosity to get the best of him.

My hunch might be that this might be someone's first 5.11 send and they feel a little slighted that someone took such an effort to blatantly downgrade it. I'm sure I'd be pretty bummed if my first 5.11 someone talked shit about how easy it was immediately after. It does seem like someone might need to be a little more self aware about what is angering them, because "marring" is a pretty strong word for glorified tick marks.

Should have used non-marring chalk.
