Red Rocks - Conditions

Small shower today around 230
On pine creek Mescalito and surrounding
On and off for a few hours never a heavy downpour
Wind was big too topped out on Cookie Monster just in time
To rap off. Bird land was hit too with wet. Weather
I know people that did olive oil earlier in the week no big snow
And no need to over think it
Calico 2 is good great red book and magic bus
Panty crag etc are fine
Use your brain look at the trail and surroundings
To determine conditions and always pull down and not out

^^that same rain (friday, 2017.01.03, 1-2pm) was pretty heavy down at southern outcrops. Specifically, I was parked at the paved lot that accesses black velvet, and I couldn't even see the mountains. The rain dropped visibility down to a few hundred yards.

Kraft area stayed dry. I felt a few drops that the wind blew over but no actual rain.

Anybody there this past weekend and have the latest info for Black Velvet canyon and Juniper canyon? (planning a trip for Tues/Wed)

Wall is fine, what you're not seeing is the descent is filled with snow down the gully.

Excellent and thanks for posting the pic. Good to see the snow is off the walls at least. Honnold's instagram had me worried about our upcoming trip.

We are in vegas for a week of climbing. We got off a route just as the showers were starting today. It didn't seem like a saturating rain but as we were driving the scenic loop we drove through a pretty decent creek flowing over the road at one point.

We could use some advice from locals. With the forecast showing 60% chance of precipitation tomorrow should we be looking at the thread on alternative crags? Is 48 hours a hard and fast rule? Checking the soil at the base of the climb a reliable indicator? I've read differing recommendations in the threads here and want to make sure we aren't the out of town d-bags who pull holds off while also experiencing as much gnar as I can while I'm away from the Midwest.

The flow you drove over has been doing so for over a week, and not from today's rain. Not so sure about today's rain, let's see what tomorrow brings. I recall it being somewhat more ominous for tomorrow.

Also out for the week and interested in the weather. How much rain actually fell in Red Rocks today? We climbed all day and the rain never fell until we left the parking lot and even then it wasn't much. I'm debating hitting Mt. Charleston tomorrow and waiting for Red Rocks to dry out but if it's not in bad shape I'd skip Mt. Charleston. I am just not sure how much rain fell, and how much it takes to soak the rock.

NOAA is showing no rainfall so far, so could be clear still at the moment. Did anyone catch any actual rain inside red rock today?

I was in Pine Creek Canyon until 4:30pm and experience the same as John above. A drop or two, some wind, but intermittent sun and clouds all day. I second his comment regarding climbing in the Calico Hills.

Thanks all for your opinions. When we left sandstone quarry it was sprinkling but it wasn't enough to really even get the ground wet. I think I just got spooked by weeks of reading wet sandstone posts prior to my trip and then driving through the flow over the road.

We'll be headed to calico today as suggested.

Anyone at red rock? How are the conditions? Ok to climb today?

Besides the super ominous clouds and thunder, should be ok. Just use wooden cams and hip belays, avoiding all metal objects, haha.

Snowy, at least in the winter. Far from ideal for rock climbing, but fun for skiing, sledding or romping around in the snow.

If you're stuck in Las Vegas, I hear that Pincushion Peak route is pretty cool....
