City of Rocks

I'll be traveling through New Mexico next week and hoping to stop in City of Rocks to camp and do a little bouldering. Does anyone have any beta/topo for this place? I'm up to pick up a guidebook as well but between Tuscon/City of Rocks there isn't much in the way of climbing stores and no where I've called has any guidebooks.

Thanks!

There really isn't and you really don't need a guidebook. City of rocks is pretty awesome, and you should just jump on whatever looks good. It's nice to just wander through the maze of boulders until something catches your eye. Just make sure that you have a way down :-).

Wrong city of rocks. It would be a loooong drive from SLC indeed.

Very fun park.
Never needed a book there, but...

COAS Bookstore in Las Cruces has the guidebook in stock. But as stated, it can be pretty fun to just wander around and climb whatever catches your eye! Very little chalk or anything else to indicate prior ascents, so it makes for a cool experience.

Thanks everyone for the replies! Looks like exploring is the way to go! I don't usually boulder, if at all, but I figured I'm traveling alone through some cool places so why not. If anyone is around in the next week (City of Rocks/Albuquerque area) and wants to climb lemme know!!

I actually called their visitor center and they told me they don't actually sell anything there (which I found odd) and they do have a guide book but you can only look at it there. Although I think I'll get there when the visitor center is closed.

Cheers! Happy holidays!

We just took a family trip down 25 and on to silver city. We happened to arrive at the city of rocks in a cool drizzle. My boy and I climbed around to content success and I retired to a chair to drink a beer (or two).
I've heard tell of anchors at the top of some rocks but did not spot any. We always reconn-ed a way down then went for it on the rocks. I did break a little off at a critical time but nothing came of it. You can do a bunch of traversing if you just want to climb around but I wasn't willing to top out on much of anything. (maybe ~~20 feet high)
We will be back someday! Have fun.

It is beautiful, all bouldering, there is some friable rock due to lack if traffic, and it is most definitely worth it.

It's a terific road trip stop. Camping available right next to the boulders. Plenty of good, fun rock.

Checkout Mills Canyon/Roy, NM for more great NM bouldering.

Lowell Stevenson wrote a very useful guidebook. You can contact him through his website vcrux.com/huecotanks/ to see if he has one he can sell you.

It is available here: amazon.com/Southern-Mexico-…

This place is definitely worth checking out - the camping is almost as good as the bouldering

it's a great place to stop! problems are fairly highball but solid friction, some cracks too. there is a guidebook at the visitor center you can take photos of. there's also a hot spring next door. well worth the detour!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
