Use of C3's in Pin Scars

On harder leads in the Gunks I often bring purple, green and red C3's in addition to my beloved Aliens.

But more important is my biner with assorted micros. I learned this trick from RGold. I carry three each of three different brands of micro nuts (9 nuts in total) on one biner. It weighs almost nothing and those nuts are crucial! If I am leading hard tens or above I am always grateful for those micros.

Aliens are really great for pin scars too.

I recently purchased my first C3 ... it's the red .... I am LOVING it! I am going to buy a couple more.

Having climbed a bit in the Gunks (from 5.7 to 5.11+), I've never once needed or wanted a tricam or an offset cam. I carry C3s from green to yellow and offset nuts for all my small pro needs. I haven't used Totem cams, but I hear great things. Not sure they are strictly necessary in the Gunks, though. If you are going to get only a few C3s, I would suggest the following:

Yellow, Green, Red, in that order of importance.

Not sure what your experience has been, but in the Gunks, I find I am often going 10-15 feet between bomber horizontal placements, oftentimes with a decent piece in between the bomber ones, but not always.

I like my C3s, and place down to 00 regularly.

I've taken lead falls on 000. So yeah. They're a great cam

In CA granite I find places for my yellow and red C3's freaking everywhere, the yellow probably being one of my most favorite pieces. That green one too can tuck into some tricky places as well.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
