South Platte vs Clear Creek for Novice Leaders

I mostly climb Platte these days, but not Devil's Head so I can't really speak to that. Many of the Platte routes are slabby (gym won't prepare you for slab!) & pretty old school bolting (i.e.--you are psyched when they are only 20' apart!). I would avoid most of the Platte for a place to learn to lead.

This spot in CCC seems custom built for 1st leads.

Easy grades. Really fun climbing. Doubtful you will have much company. Friendly bolt distance. And if you are feeling confident there are harder pitches above.

East Colfax is good, try on a weeknight or weekday...about 8 routes of 5.4 -5.7. Training Grounds would be a good next step, 5 climbs 5.6-5.9. Then Canal Zone with 6 5.8's and a few 5.9's.

This will get you three types of rock with totally different styles.

Training Grounds is the only one with camping though, unless you want to pitch a tent in that spot 50 yards downstream from E Colfax.

Try The Safari in CCC.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
