Looks like a big rescue underway today on Longs

Fort Carson soldiers airlifted from Longs Peak summit

"The group self-rescued by assisting each other to climb to the summit of Longs Peak where park rangers are planning evacuation efforts.Helicopter operations have taken place within the last hour to help with reconnaissance efforts.

Forty-three search and rescue park personnel are helping with the incident. Rangers are also planning to assist the group to the summit, if needed."

hmmm, not exactly the definition of self-rescue...

I'm sure there is more to the story...wait I forgot news and media are 100% accurate all the time everytime especially when it comes to climbing.

Guess "call in the calvary" is taught more than "get yourself out of the shit you got yourself into"

All you need is a little prayer to call in the calvary.

I would suspend any judgement until facts are known. I would be surprised if 10 is even and accurate number the way the media usually reports these things.

Looks like the media dropped a few facts in their article.

"It was the Special Forces Mountaineering Course guys up there. Two students got really bad HAPE. They moved the two students where SAR could scoop them up and the rest finished the climb. No one was ever missing. Blows my mind what the media reports.

Anyhow looks like MP is in full swing tapping away.

But that's the real story "

I rescind my previous comment

LOL. there was a total of one, maybe two, rush-to-judgment comments above, and you were the author. If MP was in "full swing," it was all you.

I won't weigh in on the rescue...but is that video even real? What is the larger peak towering over the "summit" of longs? Maybe its a weird angle. I thought I was gonna get a nice up close conditions report, but I think the footage is recycled from somewhere else.

That's definitely the top of Longs.

Here's more footage:

I was a member of a SAR team and also a volunteer EMT. It was disconcerting how the press would get things wrong and leave out key facts, in my opionion, to make the story more dramatic than it really was.

I've seen briefings given to the press, and wondered if we had been at the same briefings when it was reported on the news.

I think their objectivity and due diligence on fact checking has even deteriorated from those awful experiences with SAR and EMS.

Seems you have to check multiple sources now to get at the truth...

No, the only clearly critical comment above is your comment teasing them for calling in the "calvary." [sic].

Nobody else on MP jumped the gun like you did. Someone else criticized the use of the term "self-rescue," but that was a criticism of the article, not the servicemen & servicewomen.

I miss interpreted what they said.

I took back what I said and didn't edit it out of my original comment. If I had known HAPE was what caused the call I would have responded much different, but the "no soldiers were injured" in the article (plus another line that looks like it was removed from the article) lead me to a different conclusion.

I fucked up

Dammit. Now I feel like a dick for browbeating a mea culpa out of you.

Who is the helicopter service they used? It was not a HEMS helicopter up there. Was it a NP AS 350 B3 helicopter?

The Park Service and Forest Service contract out helicopters mostly in the summer from various companies depending on the area. The are used mostly for helitac operations for firefighting but also for SAR.

The chopper used in the rescue looked like what we called A-stars or Eurocopters.

Grand Teton and the Bridger/Teton Forest Service usually used A-stars. In Teton County we used a Bell 407 or sometimes a Bell L-4.

Yeah I figured and thanks! Yeah we used the MD 902 Explorer in the GC and they still do. Curious, is the "Squirrel" stripped out or is there any hint of a medical interior in that aircraft? Also how many people were onboard when it was plucking people off of Longs? If you can't comment I understand...

Thanks,

I'm calling fake background to make it look more dramatic. I was on top of meeker yesterday and didn't see a cornice like that anywhere in sight.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
