Hey i am heading to smith from June 1-5. Just curious if there is anyone around that might be willing to take out a new outdoor climber. Id be willing to pay in trail mix or other snacks i have. I would be climbing below 5.9 so nice and easy for most. I'll also be doing some biking in the area as well if anyone wants some company.
Hey Justin! Just posted about this too, I just moved to Oregon from Arizona a couple days ago, I'm planning to climb in Smith this weekend as well. Fri 5/3-Sun 5/5
I lead about 5.9 sport, follow 5.10-5.11 sport or trad (can clean trad), climb multipitch too, learning to lead easy trad, have some gear (nuts, few small cams, C4s .75-4), 67ish meter rope Dont have a guidebook
Planning to get there Fri afternoon, camping, leaving morning/mid-day Sunday
Text me 480.406.3812 or comment/email so we can meet up!
Also do you have any beta on camping? Is it tough to snag a spot / have to find nearby free camping, or can crash other peoples sites and share tent areas?
The smith rock bivy area is my preference. $5/night includes parking (at the bivy area parking, since you can easily walk into the park from there), and a shower. Has running water and a dish washing spot. The island in the middle of the parking round-about is where all cooking and eating is done (not at your tent). Go out past the parking area, and there is a large open area where you can set up your tent wherever you like--no discrete "sites".
Skull Hollow ( goo.gl/AmKE9C ) is another more traditional option. No water.
