I started a chat with the objective of trolling them. I asked if I could buy 10 backpacker pantrys and they said I should contact Backpacker Pantry because they will only sell 1 per customer. And then Peggu hung up on me. WTF? I didn't even get a chance to troll.

And clearly this place is laundering money. With how tight the outdoor gear market is, there is no way this place is making a legit business off of selling skis and a few gloves and 1 backpacker pantry. Someone who knows how to get these guys busted should do it.

LOL~! Those are epic.

Just a note for anyone else heading over to troll them: you have to copy and paste out of the window as you go. Once it ends, the windows refreshes and all the text is lost. I even tried backspacing to go and get it but it goes into a form-submission loop and errors out.

Totally agree on the laundering thing.. hell, probably sleeper cell support node of some sort. It would totally explain the complete lack of interest in helping a storefront, potential buyer. I mean c'mon.. a membership fee? What do they think they are? The Costco of outdoor stores?

I wonder if that chat thing is somehow a communication point for it. Probably have some keywords they use or code they use.

Thanks for posting that, Paul. I had seen that when it first came out on TV, but it's quite relevant to this thread and the name "Peggy." Good job.

And which one of us could possibly win this scholarship that they offer?

One of the attributes they want in their Customer Care rep is:

"Ability to solve and prevent customer trouble"

Uh-huh, sure they do.

Solve customer troubles- delete emails and ignore phone calls/chats
Prevent customer trouble- delete emails, ignore phone calls/chats, and... don't sell stuff????

I love sending positive feedback and giving companies grace when there are problems, but these guys deserve what they get.

PS, mountaingear is great, it's like buying stuff from a helpful friend. Support them instead!

Edit: Moose Knuckles is a real company? hehehe

From a person who has worked around Copper for only a couple seasons, and interacted with them at their storefront there on a few unpleasant occasions, I can tell you that they are both as unsavory and conceited in person as they appear to be online. A lot of my work duties were performed daily within sight of their shop, and they pretty much fit any negative French stereotype you can muster. The "wife" Anna, Sofia, whatever she goes by spends most of her days sitting in a chair outside of the shop chain smoking cigarettes and drinking can after can of Coca Cola with the physical aptitude of a sack of rocks. Their entrance is constantly littered with empty cans and butts because of this habit.

The "Husband" Olivier, or Oliver is usually inside the store, coming up with any set of new reasons to exclude potential customers that he can. My personal favorite was no outside drinks allowed, perhaps why his caffeine and nicotine-addled wife was shunned to the outdoors all day? Aside from being a Eurotrash haven of mountaneering gear, the shop seems to be well stocked from what I can see. I even went so far as to ask the immovable object if they carried any Petzl helmets, because I was unsure about sizing (apparently the multitude of Petzl head fitting categories was too much for me at the time). She looked at me, took a long drag and said, "No, we only have helmets for climbing."

It was always a mystery to me how they managed to stay in business and pay the exorbitant rent fees that a spot in center village at Copper incurs, especially when they have the customer service skills of a seasoned federal government employee, and the business morality of a Big Pharma corporation. There is certainly something else going on there, whether it's money laundering or not. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Id love to know how to make money under this business model. It seems so counter-productive, but somehow they've made it work

I almost bought something online from these guys but they wouldn't accept credit card payments, so I was able to cancel the purchase (they asked for payment via Western Union or Bitcoin)which they did only because they weren't paid anything yet.
After reading this thread and Googling the many pages of really bad reviews, I am puzzled how this company has even stayed in business at all.
Must be the worst company ever....

Funny how most of the people that give them 5 stars seem to struggle with English grammar and spelling.

"I will continue to use them for my Ice Axes needs and will suuggest them to others"
"I am very plesed with my order from 123 Mountain"
"The Ice Screw I have gotten from them have worked as expected"
"I have shopping this site for a while now"
"They where really fast and the Pants working great"
"I will continue to order my mountain equipements from them"
"They have really knowledgeable stuff who are willing to help you"

There are enough good mountain sports retail companies out there that you don't have to do business with these types of scammers. Most of us know the dozen or so most tried-and-true (Mountain Gear is typically included on the short list and I certainly have had nothing but good experiences with them). People who haven't been into mountain sports for long or haven't bought much gear may be in for a surprise if they just shop the internet and go with the lowest price.
If I find a deal that seems too good to be true, I usually check the Better Business Bureau listings, and suspect companies like this one usually come back with an "F" (as per prior posts in this thread) or no rating. Just plug the business name or URL into the Google search box followed by "better business bureau" and the rating will usually pop right up.
If you have enough lead time, one of the major reputable sellers will probably offer the item you want on sale. If nobody ever puts it on sale but a company you've never heard of before offers an astonishingly good price, be prepared to have an astonishingly bad experience.

That's some funny stuff. No one could ever guess that they are posting their own reviews. No one.

More people need to learn about the Fair Credit Billing Act. Anytime you feel you have been screwed over and you paid with a credit card, federal law authorizes you to file a dispute and request a credit of the charge by your cardholder. Some banks extend this ability to debit cards as well. I use it as a negotiation tool when dealing with shitty businesses. If they dont want to deal with me, they can deal with my bank. That's fine.

If you file a dispute and Visa adjudicates in your favor (which they will, almost guaranteed as long as you retain documentation and do what your bank tells you to do), the business will lose the money associated with the transaction and you will get it back. If enough people file disputes against the business, Visa can revoke their ability to accept cards all together. It's one of the most powerful tools the consumer has.
