MP and REI: Official Announcement

No more 'Deals' tab? I guess that kinda kills in-store sales for REI. |
|
Actually, a lot of the adds are gone, and that is one of them. |

Hopefully you deleting content wont remove otherwise good climbs for me. That is why you posted them right? To share with people like me, not stroke your ego? what if your pic showed up on an in store ad in an REI. would you really care? are you the kind of person that would start screaming about 'getting paid' for using your very public pic? deleting your content is actually doing what you are accusing the evil corporation of doing in the future. Except you are actually beating them to it.Meh, for the most part you are probably right. Most of what I wrote yesterday was my gut reaction to the situation. I won't lie that I have a bit of trust issue with corporations, which I think is pretty well reasoned and far from conspiratorial. But in the scheme of things, REI is probably one of the better owners MP could have hoped for and I will probably not remove anything I have submitted. Still, I did like it better without corporate ownership, but we shall see how it turns out and hope for the best. |

I cant even look in the fridge without corporation rooted trust issues coming up. But yeah, this seems pretty low on my alert scale |

I guess I'm still not seeing what they are getting out of buying it?Minor but important clarification: REI did not purchase Mountainproject - they purchased Adventure Projects. Take a look down at the bottom of the page - this is a lot bigger than just the 2.5M visitors and 26M annual page views here. Read: snewsnet.com/news/rei-acqui… |

What happened to the other "unofficial" thread? |

Nick Wilder wrote:Thanks for all the questions and replies. Here's a small follow-up: * REI isn't interested in the mass use of our photos. They have SO many great professional photos of their own. * REI already has access to millions of user-generated photos on their own site at rei1440project.com/ * Creating a book from MP content is just bassackwards... They're interested in supporting a community with modern tools. * REI is headquartered in Kent, WA. We are staying in Boulder, hiring our own people, running our own servers, and using our own IT equipment. We essentially remain an independent startup but now have the solid backing to make sure we keep going - with the huge benefit of not dealing with taxes, accounting, legal, and a lot of crap that bogged us down. It's hard to overstate how good this is for MP.This makes sense. Also, REI is a cooperative (that's why members get dividends) and have an active stewardship program rei.com/stewardship It makes sense that they would be interested in supporting Adventure Projects. |

Yeah I feel like some people (myself included) are having trouble differentiating what REI could theoretically be capable of doing and what is actually going to happen. thanks for the perspective, Nick - and again, congrats |

MP.com offers $50k to match for the Access Fund
So, does that help answer any questions about our new evil overlords or the management of the site? Hope so. One thing I did notice in the announcement: "The Access Fund has about 12,000 members. Last month alone, Mountain Project had 340,000 unique users. A lot of Mountain Project users contribute enormously to climbing, but its safe to say that a vast majority of dedicated climbers could do more to help protect climbing access, says Wilder. We hope to close this gapat least a littleby putting our money where our mouth is. " So... what have the detractors here done for climbing lately? Seems that most of them are not even members. |

Oh man!! I can't help but laugh at some of the expressed angst and worry about whether REI will use our pictures or not. I, for one, can say with certainty that the pics I've posted on here are NOT the ones I'm worried about being shared. |
|
I just made my Access Fund donation. Put it on my REI card. |
|
Congrats guys. I love the proj and use it all the time. I think it's great that you were able to cash in and still run your shop. Even better that the on-site ads are diminishing. |

Last week I was quite surprised to see one of my photos pop up in my FB news feed as part of their #optoutside marketing scheme. No credit given. I'm not bent out of shape about it, just wanted to point out that it IS happening. Here's the link that FB took me to when I clicked on the photo: adventureprojects.net/blog/… |

Hi Sarah, I'll clarify what you've seen: Adventure Projects is the company I started that owns Mountain Project, and also MTB Project, Hiking Project, Trail Run Project, Powder Project, and Adventure Projects (and the blog you're showing). A co-worker and I created the FB post you saw with material from our sites (including your photo apparently) to promote that blog post on Adventure Projects. |

Thanks for the clarification Nick. |
