Just a head's up - my partner and I were climbing yesterday up at the S-curves from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. When we hiked back to the s-curve parking area we noticed that his passenger side window had been smashed out.

Nothing appeared to be taken from inside the car - it appears that whomever was breaking in must have been spooked and took off prior to being able to ransack the interior.

Subaru replacement windows aren't cheap...

Be sure to keep all valuables out of site when leaving your car up there. And if you are unfortunate to experience something like this, please report it to police so they can respond to any criminal trends in the area. The police told us that both BCC and LCC are pretty high crime areas and climber vehicles are easy targets.

Instead of keeping valuables out of sight, you're better off with no valuables in the car at all, and leaving your glove box, console, etc wide open and in view so that potential thieves immediately recognize there's no point in smashing the window. Plan ahead so you can come home with an unmolested car.

Sorry to hear about your car. There's no more chickenshit behavior than screwing with a man's ride.

I really enjoyed living right downtown in Philly, but keeping my car from being broken into was difficult. I had THE CLUB of course. The very first week I lived there, my window was smashed out and the radio stolen. It was raining so the interior got soaked too. (I found out from a neighbor later that I could probably have bought it back from the little "grocery" around the corner.) So I put a NO RADIO sign on the dash. A few weeks later, the window was smashed out again so the thieves could steal an old pair of shoes in the back seat. Neighbors told me that I should just make sure nothing was in the car and to leave the doors unlocked, which worked well until I caught a guy, having popped the hood, trying to get the battery out. So I ended up with the NO RADIO sign, a little chain and lock to keep the hood closed, and an unlocked car. No more problems, except for chasing off the homeless who then used my car as a place to eat and sleep.
