I have used my rope a few dozen times now this summer in Moab and have been careful in trying to keep it clean (which is an impossible task). I also use a tarp to flake it onto every time I go out. What is the best way to wash/clean my rope? Is it better to use a top or front loading washer? Should I soak it first? What kind of detergent should I use? I want to get the most out of my rope so any tips you may use will be great. It's a 10.1, 70m blue water

i just wash it in the bath tub. enough water to cover the rope, 5-8 squirts of dishsoap, swish it around a few minutes, drain the water, repeat with no soap to rinse, flake it out loosely to dry. not even so much to get dirt off it as to clean the aluminum off.

Hot water in a side-loader, hang up indoors to dry. I would use Woolite if I already had some for my delicates and unmentionables.

Personally I did not have much success washing in a bathtub. Front-loading washer turned out much better. Daisy chain the rope, then daisy chain the daisy chain. Use woolite or a specific rope cleaner or something that does not have detergent in it. Flake, not hang, dry for a couple of days.

You can use a top loading washer as well, you just need to be a bit more careful about how you load it. Daisy chain the rope and stack it carefully in the washer around the agitator so its balanced for the spin cycle. I use Sterling Rope Wash and then hang it up to dry for a few days.

piss on it, then hose it off 24 hours later and leave it in the sun for a week.

Here's a question. I live in an apt and have to share the washers with the building. What if you don't know the history of the washer? All funny jokes aside I've had a shirt or two ruined by some Dbag using bleach in a public washer.

John Wilder wrote: you can run a couple of empty cycles and make sure there is no residue in the bleach cup. that said, i would probably not use a public washing machine. the tub is decent option- it wont get it as clean, and the rope will be much wetter for a much longer time, but its better than bleach on your rope. Thanks, that's kind of what I was thinking as well. I do use comet with bleach though. Perhaps just clean the tub out with some sort of dish soap prior?

I would not recommend hanging the rope to dry, you'll put kinks in it. Just flake it out on the clean floor and put a fan on it.

People actually wash their ropes? I did that once or twice when I first started climbing. Haven't ever bothered in the 15 years since and my ropes are just fine.

Ice climbing with your ropes does a pretty decent job as well.
