Newbie here, going to Yosemite sometime in July

Hello there, I was just wondering if anyone would be free at some point in July to do some sport/trad climbing with me and possibly my friend Dallas, as our "mentor." We're both very new to outdoor climbing, so we would prefer to take learning in small bites (really simple routes) so as to not get into any difficult situations.

I have a vehicle, lots of spare time, and enough gear to sport climb and a set of nuts to boot. So if you decide to try to meet us, just pick a route you think would be a good starting point for sport/trad climbing (some relatives have recently bought me a set of BD cams for my birthday as well, not knowing that i've never been traditional climbing yet!)

so yeah, send me a PM, or text me at 661-747-1074 if you're interested :)

Happy Climbing!

Hey there, Jake :)

I understand what you're getting at, and I really value your insight! Thanks for the info, and I'm surprised to know that I can actually tick many of those things you described off of my list of things to know.

There are very few single pitch routes in Yosemite, so me and Dallas are probably going to just do some driving around the Yosemite area to find smaller routes if possible.

Thanks again for the insight, it really does help. And don't think of it as being rude, think of it being more like... constructive criticism? :)

Try posting up on the camp 4 message board or wander around and meet other climbers if youre staying in camp 4. You may find someone without a partner, or a good climber who is down to hike a couple pitches of 5.funs with you on his rest day. Hint: incentivize with a post climb six pack.

If you decide to just go for it without a mentor, buy a copy of 'climbing anchors' in the valley climbing store read it religiously.

Good luck.

Hey Max. Buy what everyone who goes to the valley does, supertopo. New climber (not just to the valley) or not, you'll need it. There is even a "sport climbs and top ropes" edition just for the valley. I imagine someone like yourself (new climber) would do great with the regular edition too. You'll just need to find stuff to toprope and really easy trad climbs to lead once you feel up for it. People to help will be around too. It's all there. Great place, have fun

And yeah, I suppose if you're really new to outdoor climbing, then I'd also suggest reading some books so you know how to set up a toprope and the like. Along with that, just learn how to place and clean gear on the ground.

Edit: Dude,

Although it's clear that you're new to outdoor climbing... if you can already lead easy trad, then you'll be fine. Yeah the valley definitely opens up the harder one can climb (around and above 5.9), but just get the supertopo.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
