Buying A Video Camera - Need Advice

My wife and I are expecting our first child in a few weeks. We have never been into photography in the past, but intend to start taking a bunch of videos when junior arrives.

I have done some online searches and read some reviews, but there is just a ton of information out there and it is difficult to determine where to start. With that in mind, I am looking for some advice from the community here. I am hopeful that someone who is knowledgeable on the subject can direct me towards some good resources or, even better yet, just suggest a good entry level video camera under $300.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I personally would go with a Point and Shoot still camera that shoots video. The video quality will be just as good as a dedicated video camera and you will have both in one package then. I'd look at the Canon series as I personally think they make some of the best Point and shoots around.

Pretty much anything in this list will work perfect for what you need but I wouldn't spend under 250.

Thanks for the advice to look at a point and shoot. That might be the ticket. Any other photo / video enthusiasts out there with some knowledge to share?

Canon Powershot S100 - Full HD stereo video, 12mp photos, can do almost everything you can do with a bigger digital SLR. I have professional photographer friends that swear by them as their back up camera at photo shoots.

16gb memory card will do over 4,000 photos or 1 hour of video.

You can find them for as low as $329. I got one in May and my bigger digital SLR and my two HD video cameras have not come out of the pack!

You will want to read the manual as it has a ton of features. Have fun with the little one...they grow up quick!

I would certainly look into a DSLR that can do HD video rather than a stand alone video camera. Much more versatile, much more bang for your buck. Your $300 budget makes that a very difficult proposition though...

Given the low budget, I'd second the suggestion for the Canon S100. Really good picture / video quality for a point and shoot, with a ton of features you usually only find on a high dollar DSLR.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
