Climbed Backflip, on Lumpy Ridge, RMNP, on Sunday. On the third pitch, instead to climbing to the right where the piton is, I climbed the dihedral on the left (see photo with variation marked in red). Does anyone know much about this variation?
I went this way last summer. I remember small gear, seemed like it would be about 5.9 if it were a little cleaner. How did you like it?
I like it: it made more sense than the route proper (better crack system). It did feel harder than 5.9+.
Did it years ago. I remember it feeling like the crux of the route.
Gillet doesn't give it a name in his guide and simply lists it as a 9+ variation to the original climb.
